Ok, here we go.

Last week I spotted an Ebay box down in South Australia. What caught my eye was that the guy was willing to ship so in went my bid. There was only a brief 'fully working' description and one single photo to go on but it really did look clean in the pic.

I messaged the seller to check that everything actually did work - 'yep', he said, 'works and looks like new'.

I really wanted one of these so I broke my usual price limit and bid $155 AUD! - that's a lot for me!

Fast forward to the last day of the auction, I saw bidding start to go crazy with 10 seconds to go and just when I thought my max bid was going to be too low, it stopped at $130.00 AUD!! - a 4:00 PM Monday auction end time probably helped to keep the price within my budget.

I paid the seller immediately and the next day, the box is on it's way to Brissie. Friday morning, I get a call from the wife telling me there is a meter long box on our front stairs. :-)

I had to wait until I got home from work at 8:20 pm before I could tear into that box! :-)

Out of the box, I noticed the right speaker grill was pushed in. Otherwise it looked in great shape. Plugged her in and everything seems to work except the FM stereo lock on required you to go off channel and back on to get the stereo light to work.

All pots are scratchy free and the deck works fine - the tape head and pinch roller show no wear at all!
I left it until this morning to pull her down:

Inside, the big Sanyo was virtually spotless. I could see that the tuner function switch had been cleaned. The deck belts look like new. I assumed that due to it's fully working status, the unit had recently been serviced which I don't mind as I've had enough lately working on neglected boxes! :-)

I sprayed the top switches and pots. I then cleaned the semi adjustable resistors on the tuner board.

The battery compartment looks like it's never been used.

The FM stereo issue is now resolved. AM, SW1 and SW2 work fine. I then pulled the chassis and pulled the speakers. A quick push here and there straightened the grill. Speakers now cleaned up, the chassis is now back in. These boxes are so great to work on.

The chrome on this box is spotless. Both antennas are nice and straight and now slide in and out nicely after a little lube.

So here she is in the sunshine: Typical great sound out of this unit - nice bass and clear highs. The 'expand' mode sounds pretty good too:

Let me introduce my Sanyo M-X720K - easily my best box!

I'm missing 1 rear case screw - let me know of you can help me out!

Have a great weekend guys,

James.... :-)

She's fresh, she is. That's a sweet lookin' boombox. Congratulations.

How's the sound compare to, say, your M-9998 or any other big Sanyos you have had?

Thanks man.

Compared with the M9998, the 720 to my ears sounds stronger. The 720 doesn't distort as you crank the volume - it just gets louder and louder. It sounds similar to the bigger M-X920.

Both the M9998 and 720 are 15V boxes with a similar power draw - 30 watts V 26 watts but the 720 does sound more powerful.

Due to the complete absence of wear around any of the controls, this box appears to have very few hours on the clock. It honestly looks and performs like a new box! :-

Very happy to announce I've finally found an Ebay box that's 'as described' in the listing.

What did I win?

Congrats... I recognised it straight away. I've got three of these and I think they're fantastic boxes. I prefer them to the 920.
Great score!
