I prefer 1 piece boxes (Mid to large size). For styling reasons mostly.
As far as sound quality is concerned it is hard to compare a high quality 3 to a high quality 2.
Generally speaking 3 piecers are designed proper so far as having the speakers enclosed
And ones that are component based or separates.
So they tend to pound better than a 1 piece.
I love them both but over all I am a one piece guy.

I'm kind of with Ira on this one-1 piece for outside-easier to carry usually.
For parties like on porches, garages or inside the home-3 piecers!
I love a 8989 or 9797 type box for outdoor carrying.
If it's a super long hike or on a bike, then it's a mini or a slender oblong egg.
Have a good weekend-GB. :-) :agree:  :surf: :choco: :breakdance:

I "wish" they were all 1 piecers BUT they are not and there are so many good 3-piecers out there that they can't be ignored. The (2) that I listen to most right now are both 3-piecers: My Panny C300 and my Sharg GF-800z. In general, 1 piecers are more attractive (to me) and classy. In general, 3 piecers sound better but they have the advantage of sealed speaker enclosures.

So BOTH.

I am from the old school so I prefer the look and design of one-piece medium to large sized units. By the time 3 piecers came out the designs were mostly bland. From a listening stand point 3 piecers will destroy most one piecers in sound quality. So I have both in my collection. So my one piece boxes (preferably M70) get carried around and my 3 piecers are used for indoors or garage duty. :-D

By the time they came out?!?!

There was a time where the ONLY way you were getting decent stereo was with a unit that came apart in multiple pieces!

See circa 1962:

KLH Model 11 Portable

klh_model_11.jpg

"With the companies he founded still making an impact on today’s audio scene, Henry Kloss developed the very first portable stereo back in 1962 when he released the KLH Model 11.

The Model 11 was the first transistorized stereo system, and featured a record player, amplifier and two speakers which all folded neatly into a “suitcase” for easy transportation. While the stereo only ran on A/C power, not batteries, it still was a milestone in the development of portable music players."

AND THEN FOLLOWED...in 1965...

Philips Compact Cassette and the Norelco Carry-Corder 150

norelco_carrycorder_150.jpg

"In 1965, Philips released the first ever compact cassette tape. Originally designed for recording dictations and other boring stuff, the cassette recorded up 45 minutes of sound on single 1/8-inch tape.

To compliment Philps’ innovation in recording media, they released the battery-powered Carry-Corder 150 cassette recorder. It ran on 5 flashlight batteries and weighed in at over 3 pounds (fully loaded). Later, Mercury Records would release a selection of music on Philips cassettes for about $6 a piece. Cassette and 8-track tapes would dominate the portable music world for the next 20 years."

And throughout the years, multi-piece units were made along with all in ones. The main difference is the multi piece units were marketed differently than the single piece units. Regardless, we all have the Henry Kloss and humble multi piece to thank for setting the mark. Designs varied just as wild too. ;-) :-D

...let me clarify for you oldschool...in the early 80's 3 piecers were not available, at least not in my neighborhood, and one piece boxes had so much style and bling...when 3 piece boxes arrived in the late 80's to early 90's they were bland by comparison. No disrespect just my opinion......I was refering to boomboxes not portable stereos.. :-D ...but I appreciate the history lesson.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't the predominance of higher powered 3 piecers come into the market when public ordinances tried to ban one piecers being used in public? So the companies then focussed on 3 piecers that could, technically, be carried but were more for being porable around the house.

I did read that somewhere, either here or elsewhere online, I hope someone can clarify.

This was the main reason I thought the big 1 piecers started thinning out from 84 onwards.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong though, I do find all this stuff fascinating!!

I don't think that kind of law enforcement was being carried out in the U.S. in the early to mid 80's, Glue. The 90's are a different story tho... Because of car stereo systems, if your music could be heard 100 (?) feet away, you could get ticketed in Philly. I've never seen police handing out tickets tho 'cause cats would just turn the volume down when they drove by and turn it back up when they were out of sight. :-D By then, boomboxes were already out of vogue. :-/

As for the '84 thing... I didn't see big 1-peice boxes start disappearing from electronics store windows - not talking about the big name companies, but Mom & Pop shops - until about '89/'90.

:agree: My big PHILIPS 3piecer is perfect for home usage.
But for carrying around 1piecers are perfect.

btw: i hate flea-2-piecers..... :annoyed:

It's cool Mel. I wasn't upset, just wanted to state that component sets were always available, just marketed different. And you noted such as they were not available in your area or marketed by your local supplier. And keep in mind, they weren't called boomboxes at the time. The were called, and still marketed as portable stereos or stereo systems. Here is the greatest component boombox released in the late seventies...and to many today who now have knowledge of it, the judge, jury, and executioner with the best combination of looks (the silver would be here) and power. Was it the best on batteries? Hell no. Was it the worst on batteries? That is no as well. Easy to carry? Shhhiiiaatttt No.  Like everything, there was a compromise.

hifi_studio_1_319762.jpg

Marantz and others had components in the 70's as well. I guess while a Helix Wheely is a beautiful box with lots of flash, an Uher Powerport is downright boring. But then again, it's like getting a cheaply made Hyundai with bells and whistles or a refrigerator white Mercedes with hand crank windows and manual seats. I'll take the Mercedes. It may not impress with feature glitz, but it does the job with far greater competence.

(And you bet I enjoy my TRC-931! :-D )

Thanks for dispelling the myth Mono!
I'll be sure to post where I originally read it if I ever come across that article again.

I remember people complaining and it being on the news and the city of Los Angeles putting bans on boomboxes, skateboarding and car cruising and it all led straight into car stereo ticketing, gang control, Rodney King, high taxes, unemployment and WAR!
