I'm not too surprised about France. It seems they are always getting a bad rap about such things. I've never been there so I can't really say how nice, or rude, the French people are though.

However, there really should be more than 1,200 responses for a poll like that.

this is about the tourists not the countries right?

in that case - isn't it true that most US citizens don't even own passports? I heard it was like 70% don't.

In that case US people don't travel enough to be despised!

I gotta say, truthfully, most US folk I meet whilst in their homeland are very friendly

rudest nationalities - is really just thinnly veiled racism

it's more about rude INDIVIDUALS - not just a broad generalising sweep of a nation

saying that

the French and the South Africans get my goat . . . . . . :annoyed:

Just wait, Nick. We really do show quite a bit of hospitality, especially in the South. :smooch:

Some Americans, especially former service members, have traveled a lot. But we have more than our share of folks who never get out of their backyard. :dunce:

Let me add that I have yet, despite some extensive travel, to have a bad experience overseas. Except for that time in Greece when tanks rolled and the government fell...or maybe that time in Rome when the El Al counter got shot up a bit...but by and large people are people i.e. the're pretty much the same wherever you go.

Although I must admit, Nick, that you may be saddend by how much we resemble Europe in that the skinheads never seem to really go away...

The one observation I've noticed in Kyrgyzstan, Bulgaria, Germany, Czech, Austria, France, Turkey, to name a few, is that many of those folks just mind their own business as they pass you on the street. Many (not all) won't initiate a "Hello" or similar as you stand next to them in lines, stores. That is not really rude, I just accept it as people mind their own personal space (bubble). Down here in the South typically, people tend to initiate a greeting to total strangers more often than not. I haven't really come across any rude people in my personal travels. Probably cause I smile and show a genuine interest in their culture and like to talk WITH them. :-)
