Nice, picked on of these up as my first box a week or two ago. The spec varies a little it seems as yours has more inputs and a fine tuning dial.

I'm desperately (without much luck!) trying to find out on forum how to fix my LED's - they work fine on mic input but not when playing a tape - do yours light up for fine tuning and when playing a cassette?

Yes they work when playing a tape...but when you are playing the radio they work as a signal strength ...as. Far as your problem I would say there is a bad resistor or poor soider ... Sorry don't know much about that... Wish I could be more helpful

My GF9696 LEDs always work on tape and radio. I don't have an 8686 to check it. I'm pretty sure it has to work in tape and radio..mode, It could be a problem with the selector switches.... Just a guess!
Like always clean with compressed air and clean all the contact swithes with Deoxit Faderlube f5, as you know it lubes also while cleaning. I learned this from Norm.

Let's start from there..

I just picked up a nice 8686. I have been trying to do some research on it, but there seems to be little info out there. I like the unit, but I am not very knowledgeable with them. I am going to list it for sale on ebay today if any of you are interested.

I am starting the auction at $50, but I am open to outside eBay offers. The auction will start on Sunday at 7:30pm Central unless I make a deal before.

I have a grip problem with the "pulley" that has the rubber "square" o-ring. On Play, it should grip the metal shaft, but it wont play. I've tested heavier spring, larger o-ring and still got only very slow and wobbly playback. When I got the box, the ring and shaft were covered in some kind of black goo (bitumen maybe). I cleaned it but didn't help. The o-ring wont get a grip from the shaft...

A picture with questions (sorry for copyright violation):

-Contact between the shaft and the o-ring? (On play, does the wheel feel stiff / "grippy" against the metal shaft?)
-O-ring outer diameter?
-Spring stiffness, length when loose (removed)?
-Free play (up-down) on the left side of the white plastic part? (On play)
-Motor speed adjust?

Looks awesome, congrats! I have a GF-8585 and it sounds extremely good, if the GF-8686 has similar internals then you're on to a winner!

Hi Retro-How true! I see one for 999.00 but that's a little high!

I know that one will be the expensive one to fulfill the line! :-O

Getting a 9494 by fall for sure and 9090's do pop up quite often.
Love GF's!!! :-)

Line out I would try cleaning with rubbing alcohol all rubber tires and and drives associated. They are probably very dirty and dry. They tend to get this way after years of use then years of sitting. Sometimes lightly sanding rubber helps to. Then clean with alcohol. Good luck!!
