I decided a while back that I wanted to do a sticker-boombox. But the next thing was to do a theme for the stickers, I wasn't after a random sticker box look.
I want to do a a full Garbage Pail Kids sticker box eventually (as in the whole box covered) but for my next project I decided to use 80s u.s radio station stickers.
I've been collecting these for about a year now and have a decent collection with more on the way, probably not enough yet, but getting there.

There are two big questions though, and they're both related to each other: Which box? and Where to apply them?

My initial thought was to do the sides top and back of the box, leaving the front stock. But now I'm thinking there might be a box that has enough real estate on
the front to do something there.

This means that I need to find a box with very flat sides, which is harder than it sounds. I've been going through mine and most boxes have long corrugations on them or other angles. I don't need it to be perfectly square of course. The ideal box would be something like the wood cheeked Nationals as they're flat and large around each side, but thats not an option really. The GF-777 or a variation there of would be perfect too, especially as the grills could get stickered too. VZ's have a large amount of sticker space on the fronts, and sides, but the back isn't conducive to it, and the 2000 dosen't have a top side either.

So, what boxes can you guys suggest for this? Open to all suggestions and ideas!
And if you u.s rockers can suggest any radio stations by name that I can hunt for it would be MOST appreciated.

Thats great idea. Actually the stickers will go on any surface when properly heated. I was sticker bombing lot of things (cars, fridges ,phones,tv's,laptops, some boomers and other stuff) and when using a good hair dryer you can make em to take any shape and angles. best way IMO will be to strip one boomer and to bomb the whole body. Than after putting her back together the grills and so original parts will make a perfect contrast. It will be cool ( and damn hard tough) if you can bomb the speakers cones too.
Good luck. And keep us informed

Great idea!
Look for the famous WRIF 101 Detroit (it's actually still in business)
I would try to make sure all of the stickers are oval-shaped....the 80's standard

Ohh interesting technique, Tony! I'll have a play with that on some stickers that I can afford to experiment with. I'm still desicing whether to do the full stripdown or not, that was something I was definitely going to do with my GPK one I'm planning, but still not sure about the radio stickers.

Jimmy: hahah, well, depending on what suits the best will dictate whether I use one of my existing radios or look at getting another for this purpose. One thing is for sure it has to be the 'right' box for the job and a cursory glance over my doubles doen't really give me many ideal options. A good excuse to pick up a double of one I already have though!

Reli:Excellent! I'll see what I can find! A LOT of radio station stickers on ebay don't actually say 'radio station' in the title and usually just have the numbers and letters and the city so this is exactly the info I need. I'm trying to get a few different shapes, but the bumper sticker style ones are going to probably be the best fit. I was thinking the oval ones would look cool on speakers though.

I bought a Conion that was covered in stickers, the majority was Watersports: (skiing, wakeboarding, waverunning)
I removed them because I was going to restore the box.. But after copping some more C-100s that I can paint, I wish I would've left them on there for nostalgia reasons.. :-/

Hey Glue, if your thinking about a 777, have you considered a 555. I know there pretty bland and the speaker grills are not your thing but, its cheap to pick up and its got a lot of flat surfaces.
At worst you could use one as a mock up/trial box before commiting on a 777.

Hmm yeah, I'm not sure if that's big enough for me. Like you say, good design for stickers though, I do see the potential.

FIrst box I thought of was the Conion 126. It is almost entirely flat on all sides, plus there's plenty of real estate for your stickers. Even the grills are entirely flat. As far as stickers, being from Boston I would recommend; Kiss 108 or WAAF. Good luck!

I was thinking of doing the same thing too but using skateboard stickers to cover the boombox. The boxes I was thinking of using a blockbuster, sony cfs500 or a m70 something that's not too big or too small that i can carry when i go hit the streets or skatepark. I say you go with the GPK theme

Oh, the GPK one is another concept entirely that'll definitely do when I get the right box for it, Pete!

But the radio station sticker collection is growing! I reckon I'm about halfway to where I need to be do
do a large size box up good and proper. As you can see there are some doubles, I thought I'd get mulitples
of a couple where I could for making speakers or side panels or some other part balanced.

Just a reminder too if you can give me the names of any more FM stations with their letter prefix and tuner position
I'd be most grateful, my current way of searching on ebay is not really an effective use of time.

Rick I have the empty case of one of these, just the bare case & handle no parts

You could fill the side & top corrugations up and mod the case to best use the stickers. You would also be able to have a stock case (yours) and this one as your custom case.

it's yours if you want it.

Thanks for the offer, Matt! I was looking at this model for the project the other day, but I don't think it's optimal for stickering up. I really need something with a bit more space on the front I think. I'm still really leaning towards another 777 or 767. The grills covered in these would just look BOSS.
Thanks for the offer though!
