I've decided that I'm bored now that X-mas & New Year festivities are done. I want a new project & Northerner's Waffle Grill LED mod on his JVC always motivated me to try my luck at a similar project.

I have a good JVC M80 here that will be the new victim of the RGB slaughter.....

No matter how it turns out it will for sure look much better than a stock M80...which is so not pretty  . I will be looking forward to seeing where you go with this one :-D

Had to google the M80 to remind myself what it looks like. It's one of those radio's that has so much potential (no offense to those who love this box). It is right on the edge of being cool, but damn those grills. I thought a full chop / cut / grill replacement would be sweet (and probably piss off some people  ) But if you can make this lonely lil JVC a full only Party Monster, I say HACK AWAY.

PLUS your starting with a JVC, so you got a quality unit to start with

The M80 is no Chrome beauty queen & the digital tuner is very flat looking & very unconventional, as well with its LED tuning display instead of a traditional analog needle indicator. As you change stations, a led in a different position lights up to indicate the change in position on the dial....

It definitely needs a face-lift, being the ugly duckling of the JVC line. It was the first digital tuner boombox, I'll bet & the only one I heard of being sold in the first 2 years of the eighties....no?

I know so little about this radio. Never seen / heard one in person. But I'll be following this thread to be brought up to speed and see where the OG designers SHOULD have taken it

Well, got side-tracked for a bit & ended up re-doing the LEDs for my 2nd Triple7-ZEE cassette bays. Once I get it back together for a test run, I'll start with the M80 mod I was planning. I'm lining up some interesting possilbilities so stay tuned....

Ok, I have a rule not to work on 2 or more projects at the same time so I had to finish up the SONY CFS-88S before going back to the M80 project which has been pushed back a couple of time.

Today is the day I start the project. It's going to take a while for my parts & stuff to come in from China so stay tuned....

Hey kids & MODDERS!! :-D

Well, I got some JVC M50 woofers in today, finally from IcedMelon of Ebay & they look in great shape. They are exactly the same dimensions & impedance(4-OHMS) as the originals but have that sexy blue-grey poly-urethane coating that made the M90 woofers so great & no cracks or UV damage at all. Take a look.

As you can see below, both the original & M50 woofers are the same size, depth, etc. which is good since the M80 is very cramped inside & there is no extra room for big magnets, etc,

Now the fun begins with design & experimentation to see what looks good & what doesn't. In the meantime, I'm waiting on some 3-pin fan extension cables for my connections so will be at least another 3 weeks before I can really start putting the waffle monster into action....

stay tuned...

Judging from the space left inside the cabinet, this will never be as pounding as an M70 but it will be close with the M50 cans....

I lucked out as the ones I got here shined up nicely. The center caps are 95% perfect & the cones are exceptionally clean & almost completely unblemished, except for the ribbing that collected dust, like 98% of the rest out there....

Time for some paint.....

I tried, UN-successfully, to paint M90 woofers in the past & they were CRUD!! absolute POS junk! Anyways, different approach this time will ensure my success.

stay tuned....

Ok, a taste of things to come for the M80...I have to think up a good name for it too....

I want to thank Northerner for inspiring part of the mod shown above with his waffle grill LED mod. He posted a thread & I thought it looked great & wanted to do something similar but with a full RGB system for more punch....

stay tuned....
