Not what I would call "special" from Sony. If your looking for a good garden box this is a step above that with the EQ and other features. But as far a power, sound and classic looks, I think you know the answer there. :-)

I don't think you could wrong for that sort of money. The CFS-W600 looks to be quite a small unit when you compare the speaker size and tape doors so it's unlikely to be a thumper but still might sound ok. Looks to be of mid to late 1980s vintage.

It all depends on what needs fixing on this unit. Don't forget to post up some pics when you do the pull down/repair job.

Good luck,

James.... :-)

Can't go wrong for 99p and it is a Sony but it won't blow your mind...but it's best to practise your fixing skills on a cheap box before you work on a good one. I completely pulled apart one cheap box just to see how it all worked. :-)

If testing your skills on a cheap box is in order then this will fill the bill. And sounds better than a 4747... :-D

I have the lower end version of this radio, 3 band EQ and what not....it's not bad....not a pounder, but you can dial in the sound a bit. I've had mine for years, can't seem to part with it. So it must be doing something right :smooch:

It sounds like it will suit me anyway.
I just want something that sounds better than my crappy laptop speakers. I also don't have much space at the moment.
I am hoping it is not too much to fix .
Heres the listing description

"Won't switch on, battery compartment at the back is rusty and does not work with battery also. 3 buttons (stop, record and pause buttons) need sorting as they came off from it's place but buttons are not damaged."

Sounds like it could be simple (or it could be done for !) but it looks clean and all the buttons, switches and knobs seem to be there.

I also like that it has 5 bands of SW. You don't see that on many boomboxes do you ?

No, and SW still offers some interesting listening. It doesn't appear to have any Long Waveband coverage though, suggesting that it's not a UK spec one.
At 99p you can't possibly go wrong, you could sell it in bits for far more.
Or relist it, adding the words "retro i-pod dock" to the description and watch the bids roll in!

First, this is going to be WAY better than lap top speakers. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I bet if you use DEOXIT electronic cleaning spray on the power switch, function switch and possibly the switch where the power plug plugs in (switches from ac to dc) that i will work.

:agree:
Also, the battery issue may be due to all that corrosion you see in the battery compartment. The corrosion sometimes tends to creep up the leads to the power supply. Easy fix is to desolder the old leads from the battery terminals and solder in some fresh ones. That is, if the power problem is as simple as the general concensus.
If not, I wouldn't lose any sleep over 99p. Excellent "practice" box and daily carrier.

Just get some good white cidar vinegar on those battery posts and watch the corrosion sizzle off. then maybe hit with a baking soda/water mix for neutralization. blamo.

Update.

This arrived on Monday. (Slow delivery due to me being tightfisted and arranging my own courier !)
Unpacked it , looked it over.
Noticed that the voltage switch on the back was set to 110V.
Switched it to 240V.
Plugged it in.... nothing.
Thinks...... someone plugged it into a 240V supply whilst it was set for 110V......... fuse?

Lets take it apart and check.
ARRRRG... screwdriver is not long enough.

Trip to maplin for switch cleaner for SK353... buy long screwdriver.

Tricky disemboweling.

AHA... blown fuse !

Tomorrow I will get a fuse and hopefully get it booming again.

Update 2
I finally had time to get back to this today. The fuse did nothing.
It was defiantly plugged in to 240v whilst set to 110. There are signs of overheating on the fuse board, in fact one connection even had the solder melted away from it.

I don't have my multi meter handy at the moment but I am wondering if the transformer may be done for.
Anyone got any tips for this sort of problem ?
