The motor that powers the main belts is MASSIVE, 2 inches in diameter-ish. Plus a second motor for fast forward and rewind. It uses some solenoids to snap things in place too.

I'm wondering if it can play music while being carried.
I guess that will not be a problem . No safety switch like in the Sharp VZ series

A little update, I dropped off the Aiwa at my tech to give me an estimate. Hopefully it's not going to be over the top. These units aren't very valuable and dumping a bunch into it doesn't make sense. Also, on the website / forum reel-reel.com (yeah, there are nut jobs out there that collect these things, WIERDO'S!) they only give this unit a 5/10 on sound quality. So it's unlikely to go up in value. But HEY, we're having fun!

Here are some more pictures of the inside with the front and back covers off

UPDATE: This Aiwa has taken me down some long roads, but I am happy to report, it is (as of the writing of this), fully functional. But it took a lot of time, effort and way more money than this thing will every be worth to get it that way.

Where I left off...

I had just dropped off this unit at a repair tech I found a few years back. He doesn't do "Boomboxes". Same as everyone else, he thinks they aren't worth enough money to justify what he will charge, so he doesn't even have a look. I have had him fix two 8 track players and an amplifier.

He did go through this unit, re-belted it and did get it working. The problem that I still ended up with was, the drive motor was so weak that when it got to the last 1/3 of the tape, it would start to slow really bad and then eventually stop. Being me, I had to open it up and start poking around again and being me, I farked it up. First, I accidently ripped the POWER LIGHT BULB out of the wiring. This light is always on while plugged in. My thought was, maybe the motor needed to be cleaned and lubed. I purchased the manual from Analogue Alley, so I knew where to go looking. When I finally got the motor out and started taking it apart, it became clear that this was not just an electric motor. It was a stepper motor with a lot of bits and pieces in it. And, as suspected, it was full of fuzz (not the blue kind) and the grease had dried out. So I cleaned, lubed, re-assembled, tested and playback didn't work. FF & RWD worked, but no play. There are so many leaf switches inside, I tried going through the manual, tested everything. But I couldn't figure it out.

So, on to the shelf it went.

Then recently, when I found my old tech and had him fix the M90, when I picked that up, I dropped this off. He had it for a few weeks, called me said it was ready, I went and picked it up and presto, it worked for about two hours, until I set up to record on some brand NIB tape I bought and it stopped playing, FF & RWD. Nothing. I was locked up. So, back to the tech and a few more weeks and now we are here again. I have been testing. So far so good. I am currently clearing the tape to prepare to record a mix tape and it seems to be working

If this works....

This is the plan. I have a camping trip this summer with a large group (as mentioned previously in this thread). I plan to bring this and two full reels of mixed music and the JVC-3090 to use for playback. I reel to reel has speakers, but I want to crank it! Also, the two together look like something an evil villain would have in his lair

So, that's where we are now. If this unit makes it through the recording process of two full tapes, which are about 90 minutes of recorded music each, then survive playback during camping, then it will be worth the 5X its actual value that I have paid to purchase and repair. Stupid, but that's how I roll
