The motor that powers the main belts is MASSIVE, 2 inches in diameter-ish. Plus a second motor for fast forward and rewind. It uses some solenoids to snap things in place too.

I'm wondering if it can play music while being carried.
I guess that will not be a problem . No safety switch like in the Sharp VZ series

A little update, I dropped off the Aiwa at my tech to give me an estimate. Hopefully it's not going to be over the top. These units aren't very valuable and dumping a bunch into it doesn't make sense. Also, on the website / forum reel-reel.com (yeah, there are nut jobs out there that collect these things, WIERDO'S!) they only give this unit a 5/10 on sound quality. So it's unlikely to go up in value. But HEY, we're having fun!
