Bill.... it's no problem. I just want to make sure that when we give advice to members, especially newer ones that are self acknowledged novices, we not give them improper advice. The proper way to adjust tape speed on the M70 is in the motor, and prescribed as such in the service manual. Of course any changes to the tape transport assembly such as belt tension and lubrication of the moving parts will affect the speed so it should be adjusted after the deck is serviced, unless there is no intention to service and the deck is otherwise working properly, then just the motor adjustment should be sufficient to compensate for wear and loosening of the moving parts. As for backlash, unless the nylon bearing is worn, it should not require adjustment unless someone has been in there before and tinkered with it.

Well, if you are all thumbs at the task of disassembling an M70 then fixing the deck will quickly turn to a nightmare if you attempt the belt swap. Try and find someone with the knowledge & charity to help ya out. The deck probably nees belts, possibly an IDLER cleaning or replacement is required after 30 years. Who knows?

Anyway, the main point is you need to service the deck properly & making guesses about how to do that without the knowledge will end poorly. Try & take an old watch apart to clean it without any training. Its the same thing.
