what % of ebay boxes have you all won --
that were delivered safely and were both cosmetically and functionally --as described-

for me --i am not too picky --and dont count small grill dents or slightly warped handles ---
or a 25% off-balance problem as any big deal...

still --with these relaxed standards --
only about 60% of my 'wins' arrive ...as hoped for
----------------------

what about you guys ?

Total percentage of Ebay wins that have arrived 'As Described': 0%
Total percentage of Ebay wins that were repairable and have been more fun in the process: 100% :breakdance:

So far, doing pretty good..and I've been winning some horribly worded auctions.. like 3 sentences describing if it works or not!
other than the Conion covered in roaches that the seller failed to disclose, most all my boxes have arrived as expected..
In my 2nd Lasonic 920's case, even better! Bought it as a parts box, but everything works! Just needed a lil TLC... ;-)

I'd have to say upwards of 90%. And at least 80% of my collection has been bought off ebay and yahoo.jp.

I can't even remember a time I bought a radio that gave me more issues than what was gleaned from the auction or messages
from the seller.

Of course with yahoo.jp, theres no opportunity to contact the seller for further details, and the broken translations make it a hell
of a higher risk than ebay. But it's only the ones I've thrown the dice with that have obviously had terrible odds that have disappointed,
but that's the way the game goes.

Blasterkarma balances it all out.

Rock On.

Of the many boxes I bought from ebay one arrived smashed due to seriously poor packaging, one arrived in significantly worse condition than described and one didn't arrive at all. I got a partial refund for the second one, the stupid packer wrote some pretty retarded messages how he did everything perfectly fine and the one who never sent me the box also wouldn't send me a reply.

I bought one box from a Chinese seller and it arrived unharmed
I bought one from ebay USA and was very happy
I bought one from yahoo.jp and was the happiest guy :breakdance:

I recently brought a box off ebay that said it didn't have any scatches or marks, when I picked it up it was dark and I was in a hurry. The next day when i checked it out there were light scratches all down one side (they are light, not deep) and a couple of marks on the front, it wasn't a deal breaker for me and I am still quite happy with the purchase. The majority of my boxes have been wild finds but the others from ebay have been with only small variances from the listing description.

Most seller are not collectors and as such don't know how to describe an item. I find that a lot of ebay sellers not out to deceive buyer they just don't understand what matters to a collector, what is fine to your average joe is a major cosmetic flaw to a collector. I wish people would not say "deck doesn't work, needs new belts" how on earth do they know this. Your average seller only turns the unit on, if there is sound the unit is "good" they don't test all features and functions, any cosmetic flaws are a form of "patina" to them and expected with the units age. I am not defending scam sellers who intentionally miss describe items.

This description issue is not only confined to boomboxes, it seems to be prevalent in the electronics categories but I imagine it is common across all categories, especially for items that people collect.

Packing of items is an issue, I have never received an item that I would say was well packed or anywhere near how I would pack. I sent an amp the other day and used around 10 meters of bubble wrap to ensure safety, what I receive is lucky to have one layer of bubble wrap or padding if it has any at all. Sellers also seem to take offence to any packing suggestion or guidelines from buyers, this is due to most trying to reduce any packing costs as they are scared to charge "handling" fees. I am prepared to pay a premium (within reason) for packing supplies if I know it will arrive properly packed.

There are changes coming to ebay (au at least), from early 2013 all listings are required to have at least one photo, this might prompt sellers to offer better images rather than the dark ones they put up now.

Good point regarding the shipping and the lack of proper padding/bubble wrap. I have had perfectly good radios complete wrecked by packaging issues. Unlike many that have responded to this thread, most of my Ebay boxes were listed as having 'tape decks working'. Almost all didn't work at all! No play, no ffwd, no rewind?!

I'm much picker now with Ebay. I actively avoid buying sight unseen if I can avoid it. I am also sick of paying high shipping costs everytime.
My best buys have always involved buying locally.

Unfortunately postage is high in Au, people who do not posts items regularly don't understand the actual cost of shipping (this is not a slight against you) I have lost $$ on postage many times in the past, especially with couriers. I sold a GF-9191 to Scott and was quoted around $30-$35, two or three days later when I booked the freight it had jumped to over $50, the amp I sent went up around $10 and the cost of bubble wrap I used (and absorbed the $$) was around $14

The only times I have been questioned on postage prices is from buyers only (not ebayer's who also sell) we don't have enough competition with postage or freight down here for the prices to be reasonable, the other issue is the price rise for a small carton size increases or weight increase through Auspost.

Yes, I wasn't complaining of sellers overcharging for shipping. I work as a courier for Australia Post. And yes, IMHO Aussie post is expensive!

Probably 50% for me. Luckily the ones that are damaged I end up getting for free or really cheap after I make a claim, which is the best way to collect for my situation. I still get to enjoy the boxes after I do some cosmetic repairs and it costs me little $$ .

That doesn't mean I want them to be damaged  - it just seems that most ebay sellers have their heads up their asses and end up packaging them like donkey ****. :dunce:

So far (knocking on wood) I'd have to say that in terms of boombox purchases, I've gotten what I was expecting from ebay sellers every time so far. That includes a couple boxes that were shipped from Germany.

But, I will also say that I'm pretty picky about what I'll buy from ebay and I don't have a huge collection.

Damage from shipping? I would say only 10%.

But faults that the seller did not describe? I would say 80%. Even when dealing with fellow collectors.

10% - shipping damage
20% - Obvious and blatant very inaccurate description, pictures taken in a way that hides real damage or issues.
60% - Issues not described

25% - I was completely satisfied with purchase

I got one of my fave boxes (tpr968), off ebay.de. I have bought from this guy before, and, he alway`s packs well. The 968, had been full re-belted, checked out, etc. It arrived. It was well packed, as usual. Plugged her in, nothing. Could hear the motor turning. i knew, the belt had come off. I decide, to look in the back. The cover, that goes over the motor, had broken off. Motor was bent to one side. Belt was off, so, i managed to coax it back on. Plugged her in again. Pressed play. It sounded, like a 45 single, being played at 33. It wasobvious, the motor was kaput. The box, must have been dropped/thrown, with some force, to do that sort of internal damage. Seller, was upset, as, he had it all done. It is now, back in it`s box, in the shed, wanting a new motor, i haven`t a hope in hell of fitting anymore. .
