I recently brought a box off ebay that said it didn't have any scatches or marks, when I picked it up it was dark and I was in a hurry. The next day when i checked it out there were light scratches all down one side (they are light, not deep) and a couple of marks on the front, it wasn't a deal breaker for me and I am still quite happy with the purchase. The majority of my boxes have been wild finds but the others from ebay have been with only small variances from the listing description.
Most seller are not collectors and as such don't know how to describe an item. I find that a lot of ebay sellers not out to deceive buyer they just don't understand what matters to a collector, what is fine to your average joe is a major cosmetic flaw to a collector. I wish people would not say "deck doesn't work, needs new belts" how on earth do they know this. Your average seller only turns the unit on, if there is sound the unit is "good" they don't test all features and functions, any cosmetic flaws are a form of "patina" to them and expected with the units age. I am not defending scam sellers who intentionally miss describe items.
This description issue is not only confined to boomboxes, it seems to be prevalent in the electronics categories but I imagine it is common across all categories, especially for items that people collect.
Packing of items is an issue, I have never received an item that I would say was well packed or anywhere near how I would pack. I sent an amp the other day and used around 10 meters of bubble wrap to ensure safety, what I receive is lucky to have one layer of bubble wrap or padding if it has any at all. Sellers also seem to take offence to any packing suggestion or guidelines from buyers, this is due to most trying to reduce any packing costs as they are scared to charge "handling" fees. I am prepared to pay a premium (within reason) for packing supplies if I know it will arrive properly packed.
There are changes coming to ebay (au at least), from early 2013 all listings are required to have at least one photo, this might prompt sellers to offer better images rather than the dark ones they put up now.
