Oooo that sucks! It sounds like you took it very well anyway, hope the restoration goes well! I think I would have snapped and smashed the box in fury! If this would happen to my Conion I would be worth taking a detour around for days!

Thanks greatly, Brothers! Special thanks to you, Floyd for the part offers!

Ira: I can't carry with a strap any more.. i just don't trust it and previous to this episode any other time i've banged or knocked a radio it was while carrying with a strap, so I'm very wary of them with large boxes.

Thanks again for all the condolences guys. I'm hoping to have her all up rocking today. I'll take some pix of where it snapped so you all know where to check on your own, just in case.

Rock On.

I Am Legend
hey rick --

i am not crazy about straps either --there is so much twisting torque
so -once a swinging box starts to rotate - the smash potential accelerates -

however --that 2" wide nylon strap in my photo has a 375 pound rating -
and if you buy a long 6 footer -- :-)
and run it all along the bottom and the sides ( with GOOD velcro loops )
--there is lots of ' anti-twist' control
------------------------

for example - i KNOW you paid a bunch $$ for your discolite ;-)
and then --with your major league restoration - tripple that !!!

add a pack of D cells --
and that wimpy factory handle becomes USELESS :nonono: :dunce: :dunce:

so --we NEVER bop about with our d-lites - right ??
--------------------

but i would surely trust it with my strap :hmmm:

My rule of thumb...is ONLY take my boxes out, in which i have MULTIPLE's...1 of a good box is never enough for me, i need back-ups for cases and misfortunate accidents like Ricks :-D

Hope you get it sorted

Rick...Man....this is one of the more painful threads I have read lately. A lessor man might throw his hands in the air and piss and moan about it and I'm so glad to hear your going to solder on! Your carrying in legendary and inspirational.

I hope you won't shy away from your big Lasonic's either! :sadno:

I have to say it....every time I have the 975, 935 or the 951 out, I think about it....the handles are SOOOO long....not like the shorties on the 777 or the C-100. Add the fact that this is 30 year old plastic and it's a ticking time bomb.

Can I ask what kind of damage the case experienced? Just so I know what my future might bring :-/

Well Glue....like I said, a lessor man....Thankfully your passion runs deeper!

AND....much like jaetee, it happened to me back in the day....towards the end of my first TRC-920's life....
By this time many of the switches were busted off the front, the cassette wasn't working and the cassette door was busted off....Then, while riding my bike, holding my radio in one hand by the handle, I went off the curb like I always did and that was it....no more handle....that was really the death blow....she was retired to the dresser after that...and a few years later she found her final resting place where she resides today....The Los Angeles / San Fernando City dump!

Really sorry to hear that
I have 2 975's and now I will be carrying mine like a baby,I'll cradle mine or I will
only carry it 2-3" off the ground.-still fixing up my beater so my nice one
will not be going on outside excursions! :nonono:

Really hope it's ok man!!
I once dropped my PC-55JW in a garage when I slipped on some oil!!
This was and is my pride & joy as I bought in new!
Luckily it only suffered a small ding on one of the speakers!! :-O
Good luck and maybe we should have special radio flyer cart wagons to carry
large grails!!! :hmmm:
Have a good weekend and take care!! :-)

Thanks again, rockers!

There's good news and good news in regards to the damage.
The only internal damage it suffered was couple of broken screw posts, which I'd previously repair from damage it already had when I bought her.
And I've found some brackets to fit the handle from another radio, they need a bit of retooling to fit (a friend is doing this as i type), but they'll fit spot on.

Here's a photo of how the original handle snapped

img_0292.jpg

You can see how the post on top had been broken for an unknown amount of time before, the plastic around the "C" shape of it is greyer on the top and bottom wheras the side has just snapped, being a fresher break it's much whiter. The post on the left snapped all in one go after the other one gave way.

I think theres a a couple of little dings on the bottom of the case, but no cracks or anything. One of the bonuses of only carrying big boxes is that theres a lot less distance for them to fall. At full arm stretch they're only a foot or so from the ground, which isn't too big a fall. That said some boxes could explode on impact falling half that distance if they land poorly.

Rock On.

Man, that's a hurtpiece!

I've had that happen to me with 2 other smaller - but slightly bigger than mini sized - boxes BEFORE I got my Lasonic in late '86. Metal handle ends. Definitely a bad feeling!

Also had the misfortune of having my TRC-931 fall to the ground a few times back the 80's, but that was from wearing a strap on the handle...
BANG!! Lots of people around, batteries rolling down the street... Totally embarrassing but no internal or major physical damage.

Glad to know the damage was minimal, Glue!!

I don't recommend straps for any box without built-in strap clips! Straps on handles? NO!!

Simple suggestion to keep from this happening ever again.... start carrying your boxes "Hollywood style", then the handle will never snap off.. ;-)
