Guys.... ! The drive was awesome! Short, but awesome!
The car was a 2003 Modena 360. They didn't time the laps, and the course was made up of cones on a huge parking lot... The same one where the cops train.
The Modena has an F1 inspired transmission with super-fast paddle shifters. But they will only let you drive it in automatic mode. And I was only given 3 laps, but the driving instructor (or "sherpa" was the word they used) was pretty good and let me get on it pretty hard after the first "warm up" lap. They make you sign a huge number of waivers and offer you all sorts of upgraded "cone damage" or "RPM threshold" insurance upgrade options and they will stop your experience if it is clear you can't handle the car. I was a bit concerned about the car's auto mode and how fast it would shift, but the car shifted way better than I thought it would and it was a really good driving experience. After all the paperwork and watching a couple of the other guys there hit some cones, I'll admit it was a bit intimidating. But I do have some experience racing go-karts and did a lot of white-knuckle and country road and mountain driving in fast cars when I lived in Germany.
On the third lap, I could tell that I was right on the razor's edge a couple of times, but I kept grip accelerating hard out of the corners after wide entries and tight apexes... Coming out of the last turn the instructor said to himself... "Damn, that was a crisp lap." LOL
I asked him how many tires they go through... he said every 6 track days! The company is Motorsport Laboratory out of New Hampshire. They fly down and do this in St.Pete. And the cars live at the Tampa Ferrari dealership and are impeccably maintained to endure this level of thrashing...
Normal price for the experience (per website) is $549, but wifey scored a groupon for $99! She said it was a "no brainer."
I am a lucky man!
I'll post pics eventually... can't do that right now, she has my car with the camera in it.
