Guys.... ! The drive was awesome! Short, but awesome!

The car was a 2003 Modena 360. They didn't time the laps, and the course was made up of cones on a huge parking lot... The same one where the cops train. :-D

The Modena has an F1 inspired transmission with super-fast paddle shifters. But they will only let you drive it in automatic mode. And I was only given 3 laps, but the driving instructor (or "sherpa" was the word they used) was pretty good and let me get on it pretty hard after the first "warm up" lap. They make you sign a huge number of waivers and offer you all sorts of upgraded "cone damage" or "RPM threshold" insurance upgrade options and they will stop your experience if it is clear you can't handle the car. I was a bit concerned about the car's auto mode and how fast it would shift, but the car shifted way better than I thought it would and it was a really good driving experience. After all the paperwork and watching a couple of the other guys there hit some cones, I'll admit it was a bit intimidating. But I do have some experience racing go-karts and did a lot of white-knuckle and country road and mountain driving in fast cars when I lived in Germany.

On the third lap, I could tell that I was right on the razor's edge a couple of times, but I kept grip accelerating hard out of the corners after wide entries and tight apexes... Coming out of the last turn the instructor said to himself... "Damn, that was a crisp lap." LOL

I asked him how many tires they go through... he said every 6 track days! The company is Motorsport Laboratory out of New Hampshire. They fly down and do this in St.Pete. And the cars live at the Tampa Ferrari dealership and are impeccably maintained to endure this level of thrashing...

Normal price for the experience (per website) is $549, but wifey scored a groupon for $99! She said it was a "no brainer." :-D ;-) :smooch:

I am a lucky man! :)

I'll post pics eventually... can't do that right now, she has my car with the camera in it.

Glad you got that chance on driving such a beast!

Go go speedracer. :vespa:

On another note I found out that my supervisor's wife had a black 1982 Trans Am with only 47 thousand on it, sold for $6,000.00 on Ebay.

Only took it out for short drives and the sucka was impeccable condition. I wanted to cry when I heard how much it was sold. :sadno:

This one is a 1977 but she looks bad ass!!

Sounds like your had a BLAST :w00t:

Here in Cali you can drive at the California Speedway up to 160 mph in a NASCAR, I would love to do that....

The 360 is such a sexy car....I know there are car's faster, but at some point, your barely hanging on anyways....I would love to do something like this.

Sounds fantastic!! :w00t:

I did one where I got to drive a Formula Ford, which is your classic single seater open top job, and did it on an actual race circuit here in the UK...it was brilliant but there was only one stretch you could overtake the other drivers and I kept on getting stuck behind this nerd who was slowing down way too much on the corners. He was called off the track and I went for it, got a bit over excited about it all and when I got to a cone chicane at the end of the long straight (presumably put in to encourage you to slow down before the corner) I realised I was going way too fast to negotiate the cones and plowed straight through maybe 20 cones!

Took one of the cones all the way round the track under the car with me too. They called me off the track and jacked up the car to release the thin sliver of cone that was left. At the end when we were all walking through the pits one of the marshalls called out 'who was the f***wit who took out all the cones?'...I had to admit it, but it was sooo embarassing.

Had the absolute time of my life tho so have a good idea of how much fun you had in that Ferrari

Great stuff man. Driving a ferrari is the max.
I remember driving a 348 TB in the nineties. I had to pay around 25 Euro for a ride on the open road.
The best money i ever spent ( ride was only 20 minutes but hey)

Did you drive both of those?

Sweet Cars

Nope, just they yellow one. Added the pic of the red one just because...

I did some poking around autotrader yesterday and a 2003-ish Modena sells for anywhere between $65-$85k, depending on condition... :hmmm: I think I need to have a massive liquidation sale! I might have better luck putting a V-8 into a Miata instead....

LOL! Great story! I bet that marshall still tells people about your cone bulldozer moment....

I'd love to just have a dedicated, nicely overpowered rear-wheel drive track car... Even if its something like a Mustang or Beemer.
