Ask the thousands of companies that still use kickstarter/indiegogo, even though they're easily big enough.
I think a lot of the time, it's a form of marketing to create hype.
I guess it's a way to minimize the risk of introducing an all new product like the 777 would be in the portfolio of Bumpboxx. They have a fan base for their actual bluetooth speakers, although they often get bad ratings for the sound. But an almost one on one copy of an oldschool boombox is something rather different which has no guaranteed financial efficiency

The molds alone were $250k. That doesn't include the research and development to get to the current prototype. They've been spending money on this project for 9 months with zero return. Kickstarter allows recouping of funds, a discount for early buyers, and the company can start manufacturing a finished product without being so far in the red. Even if successful it's a huge financial gamble.

Yes injection molding plastic is a super expensive process and requires a huge amount of knowledge and skill to perform.
Not to mention all of the related tools and equipment and people involved . the cost of all this is no suprize to me.

I would love to see them do something like this except keep the speakers and the grill section black and continue with gold chrome dust covers on the woofers and gold chrome rings around the horns and outer speaker trim.

With their older models, they offered several custom wraps and custom grills, so if this project succeeds I'm sure they will offer that again.

For the price of what these things are being offered for, it’s a zero brainer. Who hasn’t spent $549 or considered spending that sum on a 30” large boombox at one time? Also I do recall paying something around 4 or 500 for an M9994 back in the day. I read a gf-555 was $950 DM when new so the 777 must’ve been a fortune. If the price was $1000 in 1977, inflation adjusted, that would be in excess of $5300 today. I don’t expect service manuals to be available on these new ones, nor do I think a few thousand units sold would warrant one, so these aren’t going to survive as long as an original 777, but still, 1/10th of the price compared to the original is a darn bargain, with improvements in technology and features too. I’m already wondering do I want one, or one of every color!

I am definitely in for the kickstarter for $549. I will likely just get the silver model though. Not sure but I'm definitely interested.
I have to let a box go when I get this and I think I know which one it's going to be. The BB-777 will replace the GPO Brooklyn in my collection when I get it.

Interesting! Would be also nice to hear how is this modern quality, feel of the body, how is it made, all details compared to the body of the original 777.

Back then I remember from different sources 777 was circa 500$,

I have a Sharp GF-777 vintage ghetto blaster that I have had since 1984. I bought it brand new back then for over $440 + tax.
The cost of the Sharp GF-777 during serial production was around $500
Anyway as per inflation calculator 500$ in 1981 now would be $1,786.58

The case on the BB777 is definitely more rigid and durable than the original 777. Modern plastics are stronger and more flexible. Each speaker has it's own chamber so there are fewer open dead spots. 270 watts pounds the bass with zero rattles. Even the handle feels very solid when carrying. I tested the prototype pretty aggressively for 2 weeks and it passed the build quality test with flying colors.

And visible impression of the body - how it looks, like attention to details, all those knobs and buttons - is it on par with the original?
Does it create this feeling of "old good real Japanese electronics"?
Back in the day I remember "Made in Japan" was a symbol!
