Hey guys just days after finding my Aiwa CS-660 i picked up this 920 from the post office after getting it sent from the states, arrived safe and sound the bloke packaged it like a pro so i was thankful nothing broken or smashed to bits.
never seen one of these in the flesh before, its a pretty damn good looking box, i dunno what else i would find that would look better than this all the chrome and all the little dials etc makes it look so cool!
the rear panel needs to be repainted which ill do when im on holidays start of next year as its gone all yellow and yuck, would look great after that and a general clean up.
Only bummer is that it won't power on, i had a video of the bloke i bought it from operating it, turning it on and using all the switches etc so it did work, but i don't know if the transformer for the power switch that i've heard about got abit damaged, as the switch feels very stiff and when you push it in it sticks in and doesn't pop out unless you mess around with it.
is it easy to get to the transformer in these to see whats going on with it? i just wanna hear how this sounds!
heres some pics!

Congrats. Really cool boomer. I even cant see why you need to repaint the back cover. After proper bath will be perfect. No need for repaint IMO.

Love these units. I had to buy three just to get my fully working almost mint one. Did you change input to 220 with switch?

Good looking box.....I love those 920's :-D

Like Bill said, did you check the little switch on the back to 220v. There is also a switch on the back for AC/DC. That could be dirty. If you end up needing a power supply, PM me, I have a spare.

i have owned 4 of these and never ad one with those fine mesh grills :dunce:

could be a bad power switch but you have to pull the front case off to check it out.

either way the power should come on when you press play on the deck.

Wow, after reading the first part of your post, I'm thinking, this guy really loves this awesome box, it must sound great!!!
Then I continue to read and realise it hasn't made a sound since you got it!! :-O

You would have to pretty unlucky for the power switch to arrive damaged and have everything else intact. I would normally expect external case damage etc to occur first.

I would pull it down and pull that switch for sure. I have heard of somebody cleaning dirty switches with WD40. It got the switches working OK short term but damaged them beyond repair long term.

I hope you can get this puppy running asap as it does look like a real beauty. I also love those classy fine mesh grills!!

Enjoy,

James..... :-)

:agree: I've had 3 and never saw grills like that on unit :hmmm: I doubt it's power switch though. Looks like setting is on 120v which is bad thing. But I could be wrong since its blurry in pic  the power switch in these are better than many on other units.

Gee, I hope your issue wasn't caused by the voltage setting being set wrong. From your rear case photo, it looks like the bottom left corner of the case is discoloured maybe from heat from the transformer behind it!! :-O

Here's hoping for a quick fix.

I believe those grills signify it was make in 1984. They only made these for two years, 83-84, the 83's have the grills with larger holes and the 84's have these grills.

You know Chris I just think Lasonic went with different manufacturers so different parts were used because I had an 83 and 84 model both with different internals but same grills :hmmm:

thanks for all the posts guys :), i pulled the back cover off and had a look around, everything is sitting solid in place no bits floating around like the 777Z which is always a good sign! i tried to pull the front cover off, got all the screws out but didn't want to go to crazy on it as it didn't want to come so i put it back together, switched the AC to DC and turned the voltage to 220/240 and tried again and it fired up perfect, the switch is still a little bit tight feeling/sticky so i would still need to give the switch a clean i think but got it working and played some tunes through it it sounds fantastic! handles bass better then my Aiwa i think, seems to have a richer bass to it it handles deeper basses nicer and i love the LED meters they look unreal.
the antennas where a little bit wavy at the ends so i swapped them with the antennas off my 777Z as they where mint so now it looks great with the antennas sticking up :). have been sitting outside all morning with it pumping.
now i just need to find myself an M70 so i can get them pumping together :)
my mrs still thinks im crazy collecting these things, although i did sway her abit when she saw the Lasonic, she would be the crazy one to think it didn't look awesome lol.

Wait you switched AC to DC ? with that then batteries take over. If it was on AC and set to 120v you might have blown transformer.

Sorry but what do you mean by a proper bath? do you mean just taking the cover off and cleaning it in soapy water etc? do you think it would help get rid of the yellow tinge to it?

Also i've only had this running on D cells atm, as it has the AC cord in it but its running a US straight 2 pin plug where as we run the angled 2 pin plug so i haven't been able to test it running on 240V yet so i have to get a plug adapter so it was probably a good thing that i didn't try run it while it was on 110V so im hoping that now that its on 240V and once i get an adapter it should power up all good. either way if it doesn't it runs perfect on the D cells.
managed to dig out some cassettes and everything on the deck works perfect, play/ff/rr etc and it even records as i did a tape last night and it worked flawlessly so im pretty impressed by that. either its had belts done at some stage or it just hasn't been used much.
only thing that doesn't seem to work is the tuner bar back light, im guessing it would just have a blown globe? where abouts are the globes on these?
