I asked Mrs. Blu about a year ago if we should take a vacation to Florida or start/finish a MAJOR remodel of our house on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Wisely we decided to remodel the house . Figured we will have some kids on the way soon and this would be our only chance to get this done.

Remodeled and added a total of 1,200 sq ft to the 2nd and 3rd floor. House is still a 3 bedroom but about 2,200 sq ft now above ground.

So basically without telling an entire novels worth of details, we did:
-remodeled main bathroom
-installed 12+ solid core prehung six panel oak doors (old original doors were not 6'8" height so I had to re-frame all new door openings :-/.
-turned 3 bedrooms on the 2nd floor into 2 bedrooms
-built new staircase from 2nd to 3rd floor (previously had pulldown stairs)
-new electrical sub panel in 3rd floor to power all of 2nd and 3rd floor
-gutted plaster
-insulated
bla bla bla

I'm going to try to post these like before-and-after right next to eachother.......

Changing two bedrooms into one, making 2 walk in closets, and building a staircase:

After pics (don't mind the paint overlap lines on the ceiling - I only did one coat of paint after primer in that room because I was rushing for Christmas):

OK, now onto the 3rd floor. About 500 sq ft, 1/2 bath (not finished, no pics of that), framed, insulated, electrical, drywall, bla bla:

We had to stop working on the 3rd floor because our baby was on the way.... I was running out of time to start and finish gutting the 2nd floor 2nd bedroom..... yikes:

looks great man , i do this for a living every damn day

i love the natural wood finish on the door casings and base boards .in that one pic it looks like some older doors with the plinth blocks on the bottom of the casing are those the original door frames with new doors ? they look great super job man

i know mortising the lock sets and hinges on solid wood doors slabs is a pita , but not as bad as doing it on those cheap ass hollow core doors.

On the 2nd floor landing area I wanted to keep the look of the old trim because the bannister/railings still have all the old finish, but also wanted to have the new pre-hung oak six panel doors with natural finish. I didn't put coating on the doors yet, but I'm just going with a clear satin natural finish. I like the contrast of the old trim with the new doors and jambs.

I had to re-frame all the door openings to 6'-8" for the new standard size doors. The originals were like 6'-5" only :-/ . To keep the old trim, even though it would be too short to re-use, I cut kickers(small pieces) from extra plinth blocks from trim not being re-used, put them below the full size plinth blocks, that way I could have enough vertical casing/blocks to trim the new doors in that landing area.

You can see here how low the top of the casing was from the ceiling in the first pic, and the second pic you can see how much further up the casing is now and is closer to the ceiling:

very smart to do it that way , i love the way you mixed the old with the new  i would have done it the same way .

trying to raise up a door opening like that and still be able to use the old trim is not easy ,not to mention you have some lathe and plaster to contend with on that job but i love the old lathe and plaster houses they are built like tanks , just look at the old base boards now those you don't see every day , real hard wood and lots of it and thick too.

I'll try to load up some before pics of the house.

I need to build the new deck 12'x35', finish the siding where it meets the porch roof, replace the garage roof, and replace the rest of the brown trim with white:

I mind as well show you inside the finished garage too:

My man Joe. Great work man. You have done alot and it's beautiful. My wife would've chose to redo the house as well. Afterall, vacations come & go then, you come home to the same conditioned house. Now, you can enjoy being broke( :-P ) in your updated house. It's lovely.
