Hey hardmen I cant wait to get this and hear it for myself, I would have loved to hear one 1st before buying, but honestly I had never heard more than half of my collection before actually purchasing Lol, so I figure why not. If my favorite music sounds good pumping out of something, I gotta have it.

NICE JOB HARDMEN, you made the Aiwa look amazing

I haven't posted in awhile...i just read this thread and i am now VERY curious about this Aiwa...for me it's not the prettiest box, but apparently it sounds fantastic...i think it may very well be the next box i buy...but i will let SLO buy one first in case it SUCKS

I use my TDK 3 speaker box a lot in the summer at my house for parties (i love it)...so if this Aiwa is "better" i want it :-D
Your TDK 3 speaker is the guy in red. The Aiwa is the other guy. :)

You certainly have no regrets for your purchase, belive me!
It's like I say before, they not sound like "a boombox"... ...they REALLY sounds like a home stereo system, but lightweight and on the go, with batteries!
Even kabooms not have that punch and controlled bass!!
Just share your opinion with us, when arrives!

Cheers.

I'm sure it sounds great...and it really looks pretty decent...but I'm not shelling out that kind of money on a "boombox" until it actually starts looking like a boombox.
For mobile purposes and functionality...the rectangular prism is the way a boombox is supposed to be built. That shape was used for 20 years for a reason.
If it ain't a box....its a mini stereo. No disrespect intended at all. They put handles on eggs too but ya really didn't see people carrying those around.
As far as design goes....that iHome boombox (EDIT: and Lasonic i931BT are) as close as its gotten recently.
You can put all this new technology in a box that looks like an m90 or c100 with LEDs and digital readouts and whatever you want....it'll sell and be more functional and desirable than anything on the market....even for the youngins who've never seen a classic boomer.

Nobody's knockin it bro. It just looks more like a mini stereo than a boombox. I said it probably sounds great and it looks pretty decent for the record.
Its like calling Kanye hip hop.
The words boombox and hip hop have different meanings to different folks.

The EXOS-9 is that shape because it has to be to have enough 'volume of air' behind the 6 inch driver to allow it to drop the bass. I don't think anyone would be raving about the sound quality of the Exos-9 if they had been forced to shape it like a vintage 1 piece - (Wide, shallow & upright).

I'm actually amazed at how cheap these Exos-9s are considering the performance. Sure, internally they wouldn't be built like an M90 but consider the $$$s. An Exos-9 will set you back around $299 USD. Consider that today's $299 is equivalent to around $105 in 1980.

What kind of Boombox could you have bought back then for $105?

I agree they should have put a proper handle on the thing though considering the whole outdoor use they promote.

The only question mark regarding these modern devices is the batteries. Sure the Exos-9 has a removable battery (a very good thing), but what happens 2-4 years down the track when it won't hold a charge (like your 4 year old IPhone).

The reborn Aiwa maybe around for a long time and may offer replacement packs but for how long? Maybe it's a moot point as the modern consumer probably doesn't care as a new model will gain their attention long before the old models' battery dies.

Anyway, Exos-9 owners get out there and do some real 'booming'!

James.... :-)

Well put, jimmy. The price point is definitely reasonable...if not down right cheap compared to our vintage boomers' original msrps.
Just makes me wonder why our our other brother jimmy (brklyn sound) is able to throw them beautiful silver alpines in his 777, without modifying the size of the box, and make it sound 10 times better.
I'm pretty sure a company like Aiwa, backed by Sony, is quite capable of making or buying a 6", 8", or even 10" driver capable of dominating in a smaller space without having to "compromise" design.

I hear what you're saying. Sure, big speakers look awesome particularly in a small box but there is one rule in speaker box design you can't ignore - big speakers need big cabinets to allow them to pump bass.

A 6 inch driver in a suitably sized enclosure will thump deeper and stronger than a 10 inch driver in the same enclosure - I know it doesn't sound right but it's true. A 10 inch driver needs an enclosure at least 1 cubic foot in a sealed cabinet to push bass - preferably up to 1.8 cubic feet for max performance - and that's each side. You can add an additional 20% in size if you want to go ported!

Look at the little 5 inch drivers in an RX-DT680 or Yamaha PC-8. The manufacturers didn't go with small speakers to save money. They had to consider the size of speaker box they had to work with and selected a speaker size they could tune the cabinet to. Even a slightly larger 6 inch driver in a ported cabinet would have required a much bigger speaker box.

That's why the Exos-9 only has one 'woofer'. Considering all the info above, imagine how big the Exos-9 would have to be if had two 8 inch drivers?!

It would be a monster though and I'd probably buy one! :-)

Aiwa is making a comeback from right here in the USA and I think its pretty cool when you take the grills off. It resembles the Aiwa 880. My passion is boomboxes.Ugh they are sooooo sexy. But I wouldnt take my M90 to the park to play some basketball. I wouldnt be able to focus on thr game. But if I can take a box that sounds like nothing you have heard before. You can hear from 600 meters away and sounds like a bose with 12 inch subwoofers. Then take it home and use it as a home theatre speaker. You must hear to know what Im talking about. Its like talking sex to a virgin :)

They aren't affiliated with Sony anymore. Sony eliminated Aiwa back in 2005 I think, and it stayed dead until now. They're a totally new company now.

All coments comes and goes about the design (not looks like a boombox).

But belive me (seriously, BELIVE ME) all design feelings FALLS DOWN when you hear...

I have some SERIOUS sounding units here (JVC Kaboom, Panny RX DT 909, C100-F, Panny RX A2...)

In therms of output and quallity sound, the box to be beat is the A2.
My others, SERIOUSLY are in trouble.

The E9 it's a device that even in volume, don't stress your ears.
You hear the sound, and just smile.

To me they don't have the "streets appeal" too, because of that I do some mods an transforming the E9 in "MY" E9.
Even not have the streets appeal, that sound "claim" for streets.

Again, people need to hear, for belive... ...if I live in US and if currency (NOW) was no problem, I will get me another one...
But NOW, $300 here, it's like 4 months of groceries and we have a shorty Isabella growing fast...

Just me, and my points...

Cheers...

Right, right, right.
No Sony Co. power, no resources behind anymore.

It's just an AIWA brand (second gen logo) bought by some small company, that's all.

In a sense that's not that AIWA we used to know at all,
just 4 familiar letters put together.
Completely new story.

BTW, I am just wondering why haven't those Chicago chaps acquired the very first AIWA logo, my favourite one? ;-)

So here is my 2 cent take on this.

First, if you are a member of boomboxery, to me that's more than enough proof that you love and appreciate boomboxes. Therefore, I for one will never question that love or require that you never own any other type of audio equipment in order to prove your boombox street cred.

Although I mostly get my audio needs fulfilled from a boombox, in some cases a boombox isn't the best thing for all my audio needs. I'm sure 99% of us here watch tv and movies with either a sound bar system or a surround sound system even though we have the capability to hook up our boomboxes. 😉

I for one find this AIWA very intriguing, especially since you can link two together. So if I had an immediate need for a system like this for a large area I would totally be down. But currently all my music listening needs are being met by my small army of blasters.
