A different vintage stereo project

After much thought I have started working on a stereo system for my car, a 1983 Ferrari 308 GTSi QV.

To start with, none of these cars came from the factory with a stereo. They had block out plates where the stereo goes but come with door speakers and a power antenna. As this was one of the last cars Enzo Ferrari himself worked on, his thoughts were, you should be listening to his beautiful engine, not some lousy stereo! To further his ideals on this subject, the speaker grills on the doors are covered in thick leather with pin holes in them.

imag2145_2.jpg

When I bought the car, it had and still has an early 80's Alpine cassette deck. Down the line I would like to put a full power screen GPS Stereo system in, but that will require some fabrication to make it fit. I do want to keep the vintage radio in there because it matches the car.

imag2148.jpg

Today I started the very long and lengthy process to get this radio reworked and up and running. The stereo does work but needs deoxit and the deck needs new belts. The digital tuner works well and has 5 station presets and digital clock.

To start with, I dug out these vintage Infinity speakers that I got from the Infinity research and development facility in Canoga Park, California in the late 80's. They were having an employees only sale and I when with a buddy who worked there. Basically I loaded up boxes full of speakers and then just paid $20 per box! :w00t:  I may have walked out with 20-30 speakers!

These are among some of the ones I have left.

So, to start with, today I replaced the weathered Pioneer door speakers that someone had put int there that were too big in the first place. The speakers that were in there were 5 1/5 inch in a 4 inch hole.

imag2146.jpg

Here is the speaker with the tweeter installed in the door.

imag2142.jpg

The next issues I have is I have a bitchen 4 channel amp with full built in cross overs that will allow me to dial in each speaker. The problem I have is, the only place to mount the amp is in the tiny truck, which is behind the engine and there is no passageway from the trunk to the passenger compartment. So I need to figure our how to get speaker wires for 4 speakers, 4 RCA wires, a 10 gauge power line from the battery in the front of the car and a switch wire to turn the amp on.

I have started building small speaker cubbies that will go behind the driver and passenger's heads on either side of the back window that will hold a 4 inch speaker in each cubby. Once I have those in and the stereo becomes a 4 speaker system with an amp, I will then cut the leather door speaker grills out, replace them with speaker covering and dial it all in.

This is one of my summer's bigger projects.I have all the parts needed but it's just going to be allot of work.

This is right up my alley. How big/small is the 4 channel amp? Would it fit under a seat? Behind the seat? If you don't want to drill from one compartment to the next then look for rubber grommets in the car to possibly pass wires through. Depending on the power the amplifier is actually pushing you may consider using 4 gauge power and negative wiring. That way if you plan on upgrading to a powered sub later on down the line the 4 gauge will handle it with no issues. 10 gauge is good for maybe a 200watt total amp. (50w per ch.). Love that infinity line of speaker. They can take some power with ease. The subwoofers from that era also came in green as well. Wish I could be there to help because I really love doing these installations. Also think about some sound deadening material for the doors around the speakers, so all you hear is sweet music instead of metal vibrating. Good luck man!! Great looking car!!

Always loved the 90's Countach, but that Ferrari is bitchin..

I absolutely LOVE the Countach....but that car is out of my price range :'-(

I have to dig the amp out, I will post it when I do, it's in a box some where. I have test fit it in the truck before. It;s the only place it will fit.

Under the seat    The only thing under the seat is the street! :w00t:  Literally, under the floor mates is a layer of leather on the aluminum sheet and that is it. That is the floor! The seat is bolted to that, FLAT! Behind the seat is a small space where the top is stored. Under the front hood is the spare tire. That's about the whole car. I searched high and low to try to find a place for a sub, but it's not going to happen. I tried to find a space under the dash, but there just isn't the room. :annoyed:

I will keep this thread open as I install the rest and build the cuddy's.

I will post pics of the amp when I find it.

Well, I just spent the last 4 and a half hours looking for the amplifier for the car. I searched the garage, the storage under the stairs, the down stairs closet, the storage room upstairs, the upstairs closet and in the very last box, in the very last closet....BANG, There is is :annoyed:

I am glad to have found it....found another car amp as well ;-)

awesome

now just get out the hole saw and drill ur self some holes and put a good plastic 2 piece grommet in each one ,then you can run the wires through the car ,won't hurt it none prolly even help out in the future .

those speakers are great and you will be pleased with the sound. the second pair is a set of mid woofers from a set of separates /component speakers consisting of a woofer/tweeter/ passive crossover unit .

i think this will rock with the alpine tape deck and the amp you are using ,especially since it has 24 db per octave crossover slopes . this means there is much greater separation between the mid's and high's lows -thus giving higher output to each speaker while lowering distortion .

i love this stuff  .

That's a big amp!! Where are you gonna fit that? (Whoa! That's what she said!) that's gonna require more than a 10 gauge. You don't want the wires to heat up on you. I wouldn't push those gains past 12 o'clock. Don't know the specs on your speakers but they're not gonna handle 125watts. Please be careful not to over power the speakers.

that amp is prolly rated at around 60 watts per channel into 4 ohms and around 125 watts per channel into 2 ohms.
if he runs the amp in 4 ohm stereo then he'll be getting a good 30 to 60 watts rms per speaker .

but i have to agree with jr. you will prolly need at least 8 guage wire .

you can use rockford fosgate's woofer wiring wizard .

Jboogie2384, your so right, about the power wire. I think 8 gauge will be a must....getting it there, will be another story, But it will have to be done!

Flpyd, your dead on with the power output on the amp. It's 125 watts at 2 ohms and 60 watts at 4 ohms.

I did some research on the speakers and they are rated at 2-55 watts normal operation with a 150 watt max, so I think I'm in good shape.

Since there are only 2 speakers in the car and really no place to put more speakers I have had to get REALLY creative. There are two little spots behind the driver and passengers heads in the quarter panel rear windows.

I originally made some cardboard cubby's to test fit where the speakers might go.

imag2159.jpg

imag2160.jpg

Today I started building them out of wood. They will be larger and I am going to try to accommodate 2 speakers!

imag2157.jpg

As you mentioned Floyd, the mid speakers I am using are separate component speakers and then I have these 2 1/2 inch with tweeter speakers that I am hoping to fit into these little enclosures. But I have three questions....

NUMBER 1:
Can I run this 4 channel amplifier, with two speakers in the door, each on their own channel and then run four speakers in the rear, twp speakers in each cubby? Will that mess with the ohm load?

NUMBER 2:
Because these speakers will be behind your head, I was thinking of mounting the 2 1/2 inch with tweeters at a 45 degree angle to the persons head. Meaning they will be pointed across the car. So the drivers 2 1/2 inch speaker will be pointed at the passenger and the same on the other side, with the 4 inch speaker pointed forward.

NUMBER 3:
Should I put a small air port in these enclosures? Or are the speakers so small it doesn't matter?

I have had many convertibles over the years and it is VERY hard to over power the wind noise without going deaf in the process. So my goal was to get those Highs as far away from your ears as possible.

Well, this project is coming along. Got about 12 hours into one side.

I managed to get 2 speakers in one side which is great!

The area that I have to work in is so small and such an odd shape. There are 11 different pieces of wood, I have them all puttied up and will start sanding next. I still have to build the other side.

man that's great work

if you connect the two speakers in the rear speaker pods in parallel + to + and - to - each rear speaker pod should get around 60 to 120 watts each and this will be running 2 ohm stereo .

now if you connect a single speaker to each front door these will get between 30 and 60 watts rms each and those front channels of the amp will be running 4 ohm stereo.

if you run two speakers in each door wired in parallel then that would be 2 ohm stereo and you would get the same 60 to 120 watts rms in each door.

you can mix impedance running 2 ohms from the front, 4 ohms rear no problem or vice versa .

That;s good information right there!

Really, the goal is to psh the door speakers harder and get a balance. I also plan on dynamatting the doors and floor. The pod speakers will be right by your head, so the goal is to get the right tone balance so they are not just SCREAMING in your ear. I have no idea if this is possible.

I did end up porting the box to the center, hoping it will provide some bass.

In the end, this is it...there is no more space for any more speakers. No subs, no more

Got one sanded almost ready for paint. I started on the second one. Hell, I got about 12 hours in or more so far!

Can't wait for the finish product.

There is still a long way to go....The wiring of the amp is going to be the real work. Plus, I need to pull the stereo out. I don't think it has RCA out's let alone 4 outs, so I may have to replace the stereo just to make it work, or split the signal. We will find out! :-D

chris you can use what's called a high to low level converter . what this does is you connect the speaker wires from the radio to the unit and the other side has rca outputs ..
