All these guys are dead on with their ideas, but if you want to jump in CHEAP go with the new Lasonic i931.

It's new, so it will be reliable, it's CHEAP, only $130 new (in the US). They are PLENTY LOUD, especially if you are enclosed in a Subway Station, they have a fair amount of bass and do good on Batteries.

Then, later on if you want to step up to the plate and get a serious blaster, you can save your money and get a GF-777z or Conion C100F and have all the street cred / bad ass looks and attitude that comes with it! But be ready to dig deep!

IMHO, many of the older 80's unit's that will be in your price range will need some sort of work / refurbishment. Many of the members here (like myself) work on their radio's to either bring them up to speed or keep them working. If you get a $200 "Would Be / Should Be" performer, chances are it will need work. If your willing to handle that, then your good. If not, the i931 is what I would suggest and it works right out of the box! (Well, you'll need to put batteries in it! ;-) )

You can find some good boxes that are sort of under the radar, they typically are medium size boxes and not large boxes. Good large boxes don't often fly under the radar, in the boombox world size sells. There's a fair amount of the lower quality big empty boxes that were rebadged with lots of names floating around and they usually don't sell for to much. Or for an example of a good mid size box that somewhat flies under the radar how about a Universum Super Sound 16000?

Yeah those are excellent-sounding, but rarely sell for more than $100.
Even better, you could look for a Prosonic. Those never go past $250 but they are excellent.

Gotta agree with Chris on this, if you like the TRC-931 then the i931 isnt disimillar and if your an ipod man then your away. Down side is there nowhere near as cheap in Europe as in the US but they do come on ebay from time to time.

Thanks for the advice but a i931 is not an option! I´d rather break to one of the mini Sanyos or Grundigs that I already own than get a i931. I wouldn't be feeling it breaking to one of those... Yeah I would really want to learn more about fixing up and keeping boomers going, I think it would be a great motivator though to have a box that blasts... Maybe saving up for a badder box is the way to go... Does the GF777 outrun the M70 or the telefunken in every way?

Telefunken is a kick a$$ sounding box like Reli said but it's a battery eater and it's not as powerful...GF767,GF777 ect... is a great sounding box but to get one in pretty decent shape it's gonna cost...M70 can probably handle most beating outdoors because of excellent build quality....But another idea since you dont like I931 is the new Altec Lansing, You can hook 3 devices at once including Iphone /Ipod.....It takes 8 D cell batteries last forever and sound quality and bass are kick ass...plus you got a remote that hooks to your pants :-O plus all this under $300

Man, stay away from those Sharp GF-777's... They look imposing and are VERY loud but the bass is mad sloppy!

And the Rising 20/20 and JVC-M70 are weak on bass - I wouldn't recommend any of those 3 boxes for Hip-Hop.

That said, go with a Lasonic TRC-920, 931 or 975 if you really want some boom in your box!

Alright, y'all are going to think hell is freezing over, but it's not. I LOVE MY M70s as you all know too well.

How about a KABOOM? Here's one you may be able to pick up for under $200, maybe. . The bass on this thing is

[ebay]190585546223[/ebay]

EPIC!!!

And no, it's not mine
I'm keeping mine, thank you very much! (At least my kids are leaving my M70s alone, now.)

I also agree with mono - the 777s do get LOUD, but the sound gets worse and worse as you turn it up :-/ . Again, the M70 and 20/20 boxes lack BASS. Don't turn your back on a new i931 either :nonono: . Get one of those, graffiti the hell out of it any way you want, and enjoy the FULL FUNCTIONALLITY of a brand new Lasonic i931  . Add some dynamat (sound deadening) to the inside of ANY Lasonic and sit back and enjoy the wonderful HIGHS and LOWS that those boxes can put out.

I second the JVC Kaboom.
It will do everything you want plus you dont have to worry about busting a classic if the worst should happen., There are plenty floating around still.
You should be able to score one from $50-150 pretty easily.

Did someone say B-B-B-BASS!

They've got VERY deep bass but Kabooms are hideous looking... tubes! :dunce:

A true B-Boy shouldn't be caught dead next to one of those...

A true B-Boy carries a BOX!

:agree: That was my first thought after recalling the original intent of this post, the kaboom give all the boom he needs but it definitely doesn't look it the part. :nonono:

I agree those are good values.......But what's with the rounded look? Rounded corners are OK, but they went one step further and made the whole thing rounded. It looks like someone stuck a straw in it and inflated it.

Sorry, man.... Right now I'm listening to 'Together Forever' by Run-DMC on this...
DSC05348.jpg

Lacks the extra kick that Lasonic boxes provide but MOST DEFINITELY has the B-Boy approved looks!

Listening further, if you're gonna rock classic Hip-Hop from 1986 on back, Sharps, the Rising 20/20
and M70 aren't bad boxes to use... Tracks with an 808 kick is where it gets tricky...

Wow, depending on far away you sit, Mantronix 'Fresh Is The Word'
ain't that bad on the GF-508SB.

:-D The rounded look of the i931 isn't that bad... If Lasonic went full blown egg on us... Personally, I wish they kept the box boxy...

There'll always be controversy surrounding Lasonic's decision to round the corners tho, but there's nothing we can really do about it
'cause Lasonic has stuck with the design since introducing the 3rd edition TRC-931 in the 1990's. :-/

I should have added plastic to the corners of my i931 to give it a squared edge before I sent it off for graffiti!!!! :dunce:

Damn, oh well - It will still be cool

Haha yeah I don't see that happening any time soon! The i931 does the same thing for me...

This is kind of a trailer video for a jam that our posse in Oslo organized this summer. Haha just to kind of give you the idea of the situation where a crazy blaster would get us hyped!
