I started working on this radio on Monday, was driving around with my brother, looking for a motorcycle shop, saw a house with the front yard full of junk. Saw a table with some busted up electronics on it including this Sanyo C44.

Although I could have easily just ripped it off as it was 5 feet from the sidewalk, I went and knocked on the door. No answer

Came back that evening, woman answered the door, spoke very little English, but we each relayed enough info for me to learn it was her husbands and he wasn't home.

Went back on Tuesday, saw another truck out front. Knocked on the door, she answered, said he was taking a siesta. I left my number.

I returned Wednesday, no answer

I returned Thursday TWICE, no answer

I returned Friday, no answer

I returned TODAY, Saturday, no answer :bang: :bang: :bang:

As I was walking away, my brother yells out "THERE IS SOMEONE MOVING AROUND IN THERE!"

I went back to the door with a solid knock and a rather hard looking dude answered the door with a piece of chicken in his hand, chewing like a cement mixer and yelled out "WHAT!!!" :annoyed: :-O :hmmm:

I said, "I was wondering if you are interested in parting with that radio out front?"

He said "It's my dads"

I said, "I will give you $10!"

He said "Sure take it" with a smirk.

I forked over $10, and rocked with the box. I have a feeling he's not giving his dad the money and will probably tell him some white boys ripped it off!

There was this little Sony there too, but I didn't grab it.

It was wired up to a total of 6 speakers on the table. The face was marked with a grease pen, with a check mark on the tuner window, a check on one deck and an X on the other deck. This told me it came from a thrift store and that the tuner and one deck worked. AND since he had it wired up to 6 speakers it was working. :-P

I pulled all the wiring apart, grabbed a loose antenna laying on the table and was gone.

Brought it home and a quick inspection showed it does work as I thought. It's missing one EQ slider, and I found that it needs one belt to make it work, but will probably do a full re-belting.

Along with the spectrum analyzer, it has a 5 band EQ, Dolby, 1 reversible deck and high speed dubbing. Works on AC/DC and is a total BEAST with batteries in it.

This thing POUNDS HARD and at 26 inches long it's not small OR light! It takes 10 D cells and was built in 1987.

It needs some lovin' though as the top and sides have a lot of wear and tear. The face needs more cleaning and it really needs the full tear down, re-belting and....well...you know what we do

That spectrum analyzer is hypnotizing

Thanks guys.

This was one of those, "Didn't know what I had till I was home" kind of deals.

I didn't want to be standing in someones yard, picking through their stuff. It wasn't a garage sale!

It was a big radio, no matter what it was, I was taking it, if I could

It needs some love, but it ROCKS

I love this...

Too funny. Great story Chris and dedication to "The Cause" :w00t:

BTW, is it the correct antenna ?

In fact YES! :w00t:

Was missing screw and little brass washers, but no big deal

Damn, yo! You certainly deserved that box after all the trips you made!
Got to put in the work, to yield the return

Will be ordering belts soon and this thing maybe my summer beach box. :surf:

IT'S LOUD!

Worked hard for that one Chris - pure commitment!! My original 3 piece Sanyo from 1986 had very similar switch gear but your unit is definitely a step up in size and features!

Congrats,

James... :-)

Thanks James, Any chance of seeing a picture of yours? Do you know the model?
My original is long gone - I gave it to be brother who wrecked it not long after.
It was a silver C35. I remember it costing around $300!

I had a couple of earlier Sanyo models, a C4 and another one I've not seen on Google.

It was quite a big unit, very 'deep' cabinets. I remember it developed 'scratchy' volume sliders not long after I bought it! I'd never heard of Deoxit back then!

I remember having the C35 on a train once - I had already torn through one set of batteries that afternoon. After putting in a fresh set when I got on the train, I cranked it for about 5 minutes and then it cut out - nothing worked. So there I was in 1986, on the city bound train with my hot new girlfriend, 10 mates and probably 30 other young strangers heading into town for a big night and no tunes!! :-)

Turns out, the Sanyo had overheated!! After I let it cool down in the air conditioned train, it fired back up when we hit the city. Weird, it never developed that 'fault' again.

Good times!!

James... :-)

Oh man, what a story! Nothing worse that manning up to be the DJ :dj-party: and then failing in front of a crowd
Glad it all worked out.

This is, without a doubt, the biggest 3 piece I have. I have a few Sanyo's....guess I'm gonna need a few more
