Hi all, I’ve been gifted this beast of a boom box. These are completely new to me and not something I’ve ever really paid much notice to. I think this was made the year I was born and I must admit I think it’s beautiful.

It’s not in bad shape overall for it’s age. Few sliders missing which I’ve already ordered. The case is decent condition and it even came with the box. The internal plastic cassette tray is broken but the cassette still works. The tuner works fine but the record player doesn’t do anything. From the little bit of research I’ve done the rubber belt was prone to perishing with these. Should the stylus still have moved though?

I’ve ordered a new belt for the record player and I also ordered new belts for the cassette. Do you think I should change them even though it seems it works?

I’m hoping that I can find the broken part for the cassette deck and repair it once I’ve taken it apart. If that’s not an option is this part readily available?

Being back on a forum like it’s early 2000’s is almost as exciting as this actual project

Well after I finished creating this thread ghe postman delivered the turntable belt so I got to work.

Then I had the issue of the cassette tray having a broken tab. Couldn’t find the bit that broke off so I’ve used part of a golf tee. Shame I didn’t have any blue tees though

I’m done for today. Need to figure out how to get the broken bits of slider out of the plastic seatings.

Good job!
I used a metal pin for cassette tray tab, same size and glued it there.
You have to drill a hole and slip it there.
The hole size has to be perfectly drilled so that the metal pin slides in with some pressure without breaking.

If it is not a hard plastic or steel pin it might break again.

Problem I've got now id getting the broken slider part out of the slider holders. Tried drilling and a tiny screw but didnt work. Does anyone know where I can just buy four new ones?

Anyone got any ideas on how to get the broken sliders bits out of the black holders? I don’t want to destroy them experimenting

Soften up the bits with acetone? Pretty sure the holders are made of nylon, which wouldn't be affected.
You could test a small spot if you're unsure. Acrylic solvent would work too.

I made a pin red hot and then pierce it in the broken slider. Careful not to hit any plastic parts with the red hot pin other than the broken slider piece. It will melt and stick there. Once it is cooled off in a min, use nose pliers and pull on the pin head. Pin and the broken slider part will come out. This worked good for me.

Ok sounds good. Are we talking like a sewing needle? How did you hold it to press is in and did you push it in straight or at an angle?

Pins of that kind you find on ready made shirts should be good enough. Use nose pliers to hold the pin. push it straight along the broken piece of the slider.
Push it in like 3.0 mm minimum, that should be fine! Once you pull out one you will learn the trick.

You are the man!! I used a very thin pair of tweezers I have for phone repairs and it worked a charm. I've put it all back together and tape and tuner still work. The record now spins but the stylus doesnt move to actually play the record. Any ideas on that before I take it out again??

Can only see US sellers of the tone arm belt on ebay. Anyone know where I might be able to get one from the UK?

Belts arrived this morning. Fitted the one I thought looked the closest in size and now I’m day here listening to “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac . So chuffed with this. I didn’t change the belts on the tape player as it worked already. I’m almost regretting that. The sound quality from the tape isn’t the best but I can’t decide whether that’s just tape sound quality

I would judge the sound quality of the cassette deck after it's been fully serviced and cleaned and demagnetized only then can you really make a fair assessment of the sound. I can tell you these don't have the best sounding decks they're okay that's about it. the turntable is probably the best sounding part of this unit but they can get pretty loud. I love these things I've owned these boomboxes for over 30 years.
