You could use spot metering in back-lit scenes. In that case the background would be blown out, but the subject would be properly exposed Most cameras have spot metering, except for some basic point and shoots...

i think my camera might have spot metering --
but i hate when the nice sky and ocean gets the 'white-out'

so -- lets wait till canon or nikon or etc makes any lens thats even 1/5 as good
as our eyes --

ever realize how great our own eyes really are ???
like - EVERYTHING is always in focus --
and EVERYTHING has the correct exposure
