So, I started another project...AIWA TPR-820 (Japanese). As you can see, it's beat to hell. Before I BASH on this radio, I want to say the sound is INSANE for it's size and the fact that it only uses 6 D cells. Packed with features, a real great box.

BUT....When they built these they assembled them by soldering all the parts together in the case   :annoyed:

These have a "Chassis" design so once all the screws are out, everything comes out in one piece, but there is the problem. They screwed the chassis down AND THEN soldered in the PC Boards :-O    :nonono:

There were 3 screws it took me a while to find and I'm not sure I'm gonna put them back  :annoyed:

The speakers are soldered in along with everything else.... :-/ It's just a BITCH!

So what other radio's have you guys worked on that are a night mare to apart?

Watch for a full custom transformation of this classic Aiwa in future posts

I agree some Aiwa's can be a pain to work on. :agree:
Some of the older Sanyo's M9990,M9994 and M9998 are a bit of a biatch to work on too. :annoyed:
Especially the deck......

You will literally have this thing completely in pieces just to change the primary drive belt...

I've heard Sanyos are the BAULL-BU$TING BIO-TC# of them all...I bet C-100's & A.K.A's are crap-tastic fun too, with the goofy slot decks & cheaper construction. no? The 2 sharps I changed belts on were a snap, really. The 777 was a bit confusing but once you know how to partly disassemble the decks the belts were easy to change.

I bet you have to snake the belt through the right way & only take a couple of parts off right? I'm only guessing but it looks like the moter barcket can be unhooked from the chassis, once you take out 1 or 2 screws from the top & maybe elsewhere. no?

There is a super secret way that involves a bit of pry bar..A.K.A. a flat blade screwdriver and dentist pick...key thing is, if you don't want to risk bending a bracket and have needless fluctuation on the flywheel/capstan pin...you'll do it just like the manual says.

Plus there's lots of contact leafs to look out for... :-O
