Who Was The First?

After the visit with LEDMeter yesterday and our in depth discussions of numerous design points and features I thought it'd be a rockin idea to continue that conversation on here.

Everything had to be done some place first, and is therefore the originator from which others copied or expanded from.

The first one of these is the bars across the speakers, a hallmark of many Lasonic models, but (to my knowledge) was a design first done by Sharp on their GF-9000/535 model about 3-4 years before Lasonic. I think the 9000/535 came out around 1982, and the classic Lasonics came out in 1985-86 from memory, but definitely were not around in 1982.

Another thing I only realised yesterday was the legacy of the RC-550. I think this was the first portable to use the speaker surround with screws/mounts on them. Now the most interesting thing about this is that on the RC-550 the surround and the screws are actually what holds the grill and speaker in place. These outside screws and mounts actually are doing a job and are not just for looks.

I think this look or style, which was copied by most manufacturers in a lot of models, was first done by JVC on the RC-550 not to look 'cool' but as a design necessity. The RC-550 was about a 1977-78 release, but this style of speaker surround was copied through to the 90s, 99% of the time with fake screw points that did nothing to hold anything in, but more a statement in what defined a boombox.

Theres got to be tonnes of other. First runway style LED meter? First twin antennas?

Even if theres no actual facts, it's still a fun subject to think about!

Rock On.

Interesting thread Rick
I do not know about the other features you mentioned, but I think Sony was among the first who introduced the boombox with dual antenna.
The model is CF-580 from 1976. Probably the double antennas are originating from their high-end World Receiver radios.

yeah great thread Rick
i reckon your bang on with the 550 screw mounts, i never knew they was there for a reason, always thought they was for show like all the others.
how about the first box to incorporate the slide in tape deck?
i know the conion has one and also the crown 5100z and lasonic 931, but who was first?
this has the potential to be the longest thread ever

Very interesting....this is a thread that could go on a very long time.

I would be interested in what was the first soft touch cassette deck.

I believe Sony was the first Stereo portable right? Was it the CF-550? Early 1970's?

I should probably know more about this, but hey, I was using my Blasters to get booty, not geeking on features
(BTW, I was reasonably successful :w00t:  )

Great thread Rick. Another thing that comes to mind are cords. While most models use a removable cord, there are some that have cord attached. Lasonic is well known for having cord attached but one box I have with cord attached and I have never seen any others from this company is the Panasonic RX5010 about 83-84...Why did Panasonic choose to do this on this particular model when others are removable  I'm not sure about models like 5012, 5020, 5025, 5030 and so on :hmmm: The 5010 was my 1st stereo Boombox purchase as a teen :-)

Very cool thread  .

I believe the first slide-in tape deck was featured on the C100 :hmmm: .

More interesting "firsties":

First boombox with passive radiators: SK900?

First boombox with full logic deck: Toshiba S90?

First double cassette boombox: I BELIEVE the GF-575 since Sharp always advertised he double cassette feature a lot :hmmm: I have also been told by the former owner of a mint 575 that it blew his mind back then to have two tape decks in a portable so it must have been among the first ones.... :hmmm:

First boombox with subwoofer: An easy one for inbetween - the BigBen :-D

First "black plastic" box: Lasonic TRC-931 is my guess since the BB40 is not what we usually consider black plastic (POS) (even though the 931 is not a POS at all - you know what I mean :-) )

First vinyl playing boombox: This Amstrad aka Marantz thing I guess.

First auto reverse deck in a boombox: C100 again???

First digital tuner in a boombox: RX7200 is my guess.

If any of you can correct anything stated above, please feel free to do so

I reckon the first slot tape deck would have been on a model more like Rick's AWA or the American equivalent which was Bill's first box, I forget the model. It has more of a late 70s look and feel to it. It has the slot deck below the normal deck. I remember collector Mesh had one with 8-track instead of slot deck. Very rare.
And double cassette would have been first employed in the GF-555 and 666 yes? I get the feeling those are older than the more boombox styled ones.
I'm with you Rick! Sharp invented the 'double crossbar' look! But if they didn't I'd LOVE to see what was first!

My Philips D8444 is made in '84 and this states that Big Ben was introduced at the same year...

I reckon Max has hit the nail on the head with the BomBeat40 actually being the originator of the 'big black box'.

The 40 had to have come out in 83-84 and then what we've come to know as big black boxes started happening in 86.

Like I say, there HAS to have been an original idea that spawned the others and I can't think of another model as early that
was as sizable and black.

How about the first 5 band equalizer on a box?

I agree with Ledmeter - GF- 515 series looks like first with double cassettes and 666 is the first and only :hmmm: used for mastering records. Sharp GF 9595 is older than RX 7200 too in the digital department.....

Yeah that's right, the 9595. What about the 9797 and the impeccable Sanyo M-X820? Or the one Rick showed me, the MR-P6? (I think that was it :-) )

There are 2 very very old models you may have forgot about:the 1968'
folding Panasonic or Sony Boombox, think it was Panasonic :hmmm:
Then my infamous old 1970' Craig 2606 laydown style AM-FM cassette
radio recorder with Yes dial light!!! And battery powered-I have one
NIB!!

There was even I think a 1966' stereo Boombox but I know of the 68'
model.

The true first true portable carrying around style Boomboxes were
the 76' Sony's like pictured before (regular design as we know it)

The Sanyo's had some I think early to mid 70's boomers, someone has
to do some research on that one-Norm??!! :superduper:

Yes long live the Boombox, they've been around nearly as long as i
have!!!!! :-O :-D :surf:  :stereo: :stereo: :stereo: :stereo:
