IMHO I do think this is a generational thing....unlike cars, WE are the generation that helped MAKE these thrive the first time around and I agree that we are MAKING them thrive again because we are remembering a good time in our lives and have the finances to make those dreams a reality.

I do have a friend that is in his late 40's that collects Victrola's and large wooden radio's. Never asked him why. I would guess that if you were "In That Scene" you would find more people than you might think doing it, who knows, I'm not in that scene.

But it is possible, that once our generation passes this phase that it might be the last call for the Boombox. I hate to even think about that. Only time will tell.

I agree with the previous statements that the generation factor would affect the vintage boombox pricing. I would bet over half the 'non essential' things I buy these days are all things from when I was 10-20 or so (new TDK box being a rare new item). I buy more hip hop vinyl, cassettes, and anything from 85-95 than any new music. I think I'm rounding out the collection I couldn't afford back when I was mowing lawns and watching Yo MTV Raps. Same for the boomboxes, all just making up for the stuff I drooled at back then but only could get whatever suburban model my parents bought me from Sears for Xmas. Not sure if kids that hit middle school in 2000+ will really be passionate enough about things that were gone before they hit middle school. I know I don't really care for 8 track players, anything disco culture related, or whatever happened in the late 70s. Luckily I the 80s hip hop culture actually still is 'in' to a degree, moreso than 70s/disco/etc really has. There's a reason you still see vintage boomboxes in new movies, music videos for kids these days and all that. They still represent something that still is popular to some degree and a lot better culture than how the disco culture is looked at.

The economy HAS to play a roll in any hobby/collector prices. People on a whole are doing worse finically since 2008 than they have in a long long time. Less money, and being tighter with the money they do have. Just seeing what used boats/RV/PWC/ATVs and etc are going for now shows how tight people are. So there is a lot less money to spend out there. Seems like a buyers market right now for anyone that can afford non essentials. As the economy rebounds, and hip hop culture continues to be cool with 'the kids', I think the boombox prices can only go up for the near future. But 20 years from now, we are now holding antique items like people now that hold on to antique radios cause they represent that time when they listened to Hoody Doody, war updates, and fireside chats from Presidents on them.

Not sure how prices will end up with that, but I'm thinking we'll all need to re-replace our damn belts again that we did from 2000-2010. Hope someone continues to make em new, cause I don't think vintage belts would be something we'd be too into.

members would always bitch about how much a box had sold for on Epay and how
it wasnt worth 'that much'.
I never understood this attitude, especially amongst members and collectors who
are supposed to be enthusiasts about this hobby ??

Unfortunately i have seen the same response happen here more and more often
and it brings me down so much that in return i post here less and less.

If the market continualy shows the prices people are prepared to pay then how is
it that some members are such an authority on what it was really worth ?
Is there some kind of value chart i havent been shown ? If there is i would really
like to check it please because im not sure if the current M90 on Epay is already
over priced or not, i would hate to bid now if its "not worth that much"
Of course if it is too much someone here will soon tell us !

Price and value is so subjective. Just like sound.
I say Good for the seller.And if the buyer is willing and can afford to pay big bucks then good for him/her as well!!!
I hope I could make that kind of moohla if or when i sell my boxes.

I'm not seeing much bitching in this thread, mostly people are just expressing surprise at the price the J1 went for and discussing what the future might hold.

I think what's interesting is that while prices for some boomboxes are regularly reaching US$1,000+, if you're lucky you can still stumble across one of these boxes for dirt cheap from people who have no idea! It's happened to me, and I'm sure plenty of others here. And if you're really paying attention you can even snag some incredible bargains on ePay. To be honest, while I love the boxes, the treasure hunt is almost as much fun as playing with the machines.

I don't think it's complaining so much about price but more of a shock. At least that's how I look at it. If I had the money I would pay top dollar for many boxes. But of course I'm not rich so I guess I'll have to just pay what I can afford or think I can afford

I personally don't mind that the ultra desirable models are going for big $$$s - I could never get near to affording them anyway! I think it may sort of make my boxes worth more in some sort of indirect way

But for the 2nd and 3rd tier models that are still cheap (most of my collection), you can still get some pretty nice sounding, quality units that are minus a bit of bling here or an album cover appearance there for less than $50. I get more personal satisfaction (fun) out of fixing & then listening to these things anyway & I don't stress one bit about wrecking a cheapy during the fix up process!

Anyway, more power to the 'power collectors' I say. I'll just be standing over here in the corner having huge fun with my unwanted (by others) cheapies!!

What ever the final price is hopefully good for the seller and good

I haven't taken this as bitching just a thread of people expressing their surprise, me included. I also agree with Bill that I would pay the price if I had the money to burn, it's all relative and $1200 for a J1 is to high for most of us.

That's easy to answer, you NEED to do this with the grails...it basically "eliminates" people from "hoping", & "thinking" they will maybe get the grail for cheap...sounds kinda mean but that's just how it is on the Bay

For me, the most important thing is to find a grail box B4 it hit's e-Bay...i've been doing this forever . I pay big prices for my boxes locally if they are nice...i know what they are worth, and i know what they will sell for on e-Bay, so i pay accordingly
