That's a very good question Brent. I recall member Vladi metioning that the Sony CFS-99 could use better tweeters. I've only heard it for a few seconds on a display shelf in 1983 and couldn't really test it out.
Hmm, I think the opposite is true. I've got 2 of them, and while they're not bass mosters, they seem very bass-biased. The highs are muddled and imprecise.
Someone here posted about changing the resistor so that the tweeters would produce more sound......I forgot who it was.
My bad, it was probably you OSS. I have a 5150 and I always thought it sounded a bit dull. Do you recall what the tweets were out of that you used, capacitors?
Think of resistors like a tap, the lower the resistance the more current flows thus increasing the tweeters output
Peizo tweeters can be improved by adding a cap to block the unusable frequencies. Most piezo's don't have a cap on them as they are not necessary (like a voice coil dynamic driver does) but adding one should yield a better response.
