Whats the Sharp GF-9494 like?

The GF-9494 is a high quality boombox and is surprisingly heavy for its size. You won't get any rap bass out of it, but listening to classic rock 'n' roll is an enjoyable experience.

I have one and can say I've been very impressed with it, classic styling, good feature set, built like a tank, great performer and as FD said not earth shattering bass but I would say not bass light either and a sweet top end. Decent amount of power and capable of packing a fair punch without significant distortion.

Definitely one of my keepers

LOVE the GF-9494. It's got superb styling and features.
Really one of the 'perfectly' designed Sharps for it's time and has an excellent sound personality for music of the late 70s and early 80s.

And they're ohh so pretty!

Be aware that although being a very robust unit they nearly all have a disintergrated capstan tire that isn't hard to replace, but is necessary 9/10 times.
Also there's no traditional line-in on them. She apparently supports it via DIN plug, but I've never been able to get mine to work.

True about that capstan rubber, mine was ok when I got it - either a rare exception or someone already sorted it.

DIN works for recording on my example, but 'proper' line-in via RCA would be preferable

Just checked it out Rick, mine is the same, never even noticed the din before. Just tried playing my ipod through it and it sounds SH!T!!!!!! I have another box that has the same problem. Should you be able to clearly play an ipod through a din plug? I've never really tried.

Ahh ok. Like I said, I've had no success with the DIN I experminted with. 2Steppa knows about this much more than I!

I gave up after experimenting with a few different wire combinations. Truth be told, I use tape 99% of the time unless it's the blaster I've currently got connected to my mac.

Thanks guys, My first ghetto blaster was the Sharp GF 9090 it's a little box with lots of attitude. The VZ 2000 and 777 I have taken them to a few parties there is always someone who breaks a slider from my history anyway the GF 9090 is pretty hard-core, walking in the pouring rain on the beach it took a beating.

so the 9494 seems like the obvious upgrade for the punishing

the 9494 is a fantastic,high end radio with everything as standard!if you havent got one-get one!
