Ok Paul has not started with the 3 peaces on stereo80s but will one day
If your boombox has buttons and knobs on top it's about 1980 give or take 2 years
If the tape play buttons are at the front good chance it's 1982 on wards
Also remember when you finish you movie don't just throw these boomboxes out
Pass them on

Awesome! That's a great rule of thumb we will surely follow.

And we definitely won't throw anything out! I'm sure the director will want one or two, and I'm certainly going to keep one, and anything that's left will be posted right back up here! If no one bites, onto ebay it goes...

That Sanyo M9935 is circa 1983. Another way to determine the date of a boombox is to see how much it weighs. It is not a surefire way all the time, but many boomboxes manufactured in the late '70s and early '80s are very heavy for their size. The JVC RC-M70 was out in 1979 for sure according to the datestamps inside the case of mine.

You can determine the date of Sharp boomboxes by looking at the serial number. The first number denotes the year (e.g. SN 29810463 would be 1982).

Fatdog is bang on with the sharp serial numbers
i have a real nice daewoo which has the serial code in the battery box and it reads march 84.
most of us hardcore guys only have to look at any box and we can usually tell the year or atleast very close

Any ideas about this one? Stereo80s.com says the MW200 and MW550 were both built in '85, wondering if these model numbers were sequential?

I'd say Close-Enough! I mean if we are having trouble pin-pointing the dates between the mid-80's boxes, that means that 99.9999% of the viewing audience isn't going to know the difference or care....

:w00t: I'm excited about the movie though....I was 13 in 1985!!! :-D :-D :w00t:

Haha that's a great point. I'll trust that if you guys say it's "probably all good" then we should greenlight it to be in the film! Thanks for your help!
