I'm at 85-90% out of 150 boomboxes!! About 15-20 need belts mostly. Its getting better but man belts are expensive! Now my 9998 Santos (2) those might be the last to get belted. Not going to try until I do all others!!!

I'm at around 80% at the mo. Try to get to 100, but I get new boxes all the time and can't keep up fixing them lol. It's all cassettes or fm transmitter here for the boxes. Use the line in primarily to put music on tape :)

Only about 50% from me (rounded up) ... 6 of my 13 boxes decks work ... it would be more but I just haven't had time recently ... family life/outings taking priority ... but hope to get a new workshop built in garden soon, so will have less excuse then :-)

I just went through and re-read all this...

I need to get off my arse and LEARN the "Why" & the "How" when it comes to decks.

To me, they are little mysteries of complexity and astonishment.

I don't need to know how to de-bug a FH, PC-55 or M90, but I really want to understand the basic's of piano key cassette decks. How to adjust them, where to really get the belt that I need and not just "The most popular sizes". I have bought a few of those and I always end up with one usable belt for $15!

Where can I start????/

**** decks, even if they were working, most of 'em would sound like dick anyway. These are not hifi units.

I don't know, it had been a while since I used some cassettes and it was a nice feature to have on tap. Sometimes fiddling with my phone, the bluetooth antenna or the extra wire is a pain and some radio's I have don't have line in, so I have to use an FM transmitter, oh but wait, I have some Japanese boxes that only go to 90mhz... :bang: Oh, just pop in a tape!

I literally felt that way while camping this past 4th, and did the last 4 days using cassettes.

And it had nothing to do with sound quality, we were out side yelling over the music anyway!

Some decks sound really nice but they're in the minority. It's cool though watching a tape deck doing it's' thing while you kick back and catch some analogue tunes! :-)

I still have loads of mix tapes I created from my youth BITD, so for me it's a real nostalgia thing ... and making sure the decks work means no chewed tapes :-)

I have over 100 boxes but only 80% of decks work well. I fixed most of them and had to give up on a few. I have lots of hair for my age and don't want to pull them out fixing decks. All my grails got 100% working decks.

C'mon Reli...

I love the deck of Panasonic RX7200, Akai AJ500FS, RX5350, M90, Telefunken and so on... They are high quality decks.
Don't compare them to stand alone Nakamichi type of decks.

I'm with Si here, if a unit arrives with a non working deck it bugs the hell out of me and I have to get it working. I sometimes run up against one I just cannot fix (such as my Universum Supersound 1600, fecked around with by someone before I got it) so this drags my average down but at a guess it is well over 80% of my 30-40 boxes.

Ha ha, sorry I was feeling more negative than usual

But Telefunken, really? That's one of the most cheap-feeling decks IMO. In fact some members have experienced the entire key assembly breaking off and falling inside the unit.

The keys feel cheap on the Akai as well, IMO. Then there's its door, which is set at an angle that makes it look like it's loose.

Now Panasonic and JVC, they know how to build a deck.

Must be professional wrestlers or boxers..... :-D  or BobCat drivers...

There are some people who break anything in no time. :w00t:
These decks are not for those kind of people.
May be they are pressing keys how they did on old typewriters...
One don't need to stand up, use their whole body weight to press a key.
They don't make keys steel reinforced with tungsten carbide. :w00t: :w00t:

Boomboxes are not for Bluto and Popeye..

I think the deck on the Studio 1M is made from inadequate weak plastic. Mine has not broken but feels as though it's gonna. I'm scared to use it. They are not isolated incidents, the multiple breakages, it's substandard materials. Funny because the construction for the rest of the unit is rock solid.

I agree 100% with Royce. I have never seen one Telefunken with broken keys but I have seen many 20/20's with bent keys. Luckily they are an easy fix ;-).

But the real reason to have a fully restored unit with working deck is it's just so cool to have something 30 plus years old all working. When you plug an iPod into a boombox and show someone young they aren't amazed. But when you put a tape in and play it people talk because it's something that hasn't been around for years. Some people never even heard of tapes or LP's.

And MP3s ( compressed file recordings) are far from being HIFI.
