I would like a subwoofer output that is controlled by the volume - not fixed like a line-out jack.

:hmmm: That would be interesting...Have a nice little 5 1/4 sub enclosure to plug in....I like that idea.

You mean like the Hitachi 3Ds and similar, which have a "subwoofer" - type speaker just for the bass, that's controlled by the volume?

If so, surely those iconic designs we all love (generally two large round woofers and a cassette in the middle) would not exist in that form.

Not exactly. It would be more like the subwoofer out on the backs of receivers.

Some Aiwa bookshelf systems had outputs like that (and they sold a sub separately).

Technics SAC05L came with the option of a sub, it has its own amp which takes its audio source from the line out sockets on the back of the box itself. The one in the photie isn't mine so apologies if you didn't want its image using, let me know if so and I'll take it down:

I use my SAC05L with a sub intended for an old Toshiba Dolby surround TV, it doesn't look as impressive as the genuine one shewn in that picture, I suspect it doesn't sound as good either.

That's insane. Are you sure that sub was actually intended for the SAC05? It jst seems strange that Technics really expected many people to buy it. I mean these are just little 3-piece systems meant for someone's dorm room. They're not gonna have enough room for that sub. Plus I bet that sub cost just as much as the boombox!

I now refuse to buy any box that does not have input / output connections. That is a MUST for any boombox, IMO.

Yes, the sub is designed to go with the box, it was an optional extra when it was new. The SAC05L cost £439.99 when my parents bought mine for my 18th, back in December 1982. The sub would have cost an additional £209.99. I had the choice but opted for the matching SLQ202 turntable instead as the box itself wasn't lacking in bass and a better means of playing my records mattered more to me.

It's still not lacking in bass now, the aftermarket sub is OK but was more for the benefit of my V2K tape collection as I like to feel - as well as see - action sequences in films. Mostly but, I use the box with its own speakers as there's nothing wrong with the way they sound, even without the low bass turned up.

What no boombox should have is separate left/right volume control. Make it volume and balance please.

I don't mind this if they're linear and close enough to treat as one (Sharp GF9191, etc.) but having two rotary ones as found on a National Panasonic RS460 and a couple of the larger Hackers is a little annoying.
I'm guessing that this comes about because a production engineer's hand was forced by an accountant since separate balance control still requires one pot for each channel and a third, other than in amps that use an extra pair. Separate volume controls are all that's needed though, and only one per channel so saving cost and keeping the bean counter happy.

Curious one this way is the JVC RC-656 which has no balance control at all where its Thorn AKAs - Ferguson, Marconiphone & Ultra - have one, the JVC only has one track to that one control, the balance being set by a pair of VRs internally, that's got to be the cheapest perm of the lot to build.

All boxes should have a dedicated power button. Just because it's cool like that.

But NO box should have a "High Cut" switch. It's pointless, considering that every box already has a treble knob or tone knob, which lets you reduce the treble more than you'd ever need to.....So why add another switch?

Also, all boxes should have metal knobs, and the volume knob should be bigger than the rest. Example - Crown 850:
