I have both. When I decided to start collecting, I knew I wanted the highest quality sound I could get. Not looking for "home audio" but the best in engineering which put the best parts possible in there. And outside of JVC's M90, M70 and followed by a couple of Sony's, Aiwa's, or Philips that may get close in build quality, there is nothing that can touch the best component sets for sound, power or build. See the Hi-Fi Studio 1 or JVC PC-55. Even my Sansui's are built like tanks (exception being the mid level CP-55W) and feel like it. And the one's with the best assemblies, when assembled properly, it's as solid a a gold ingot. (Here, the Sony FH Series, and RX-C300 are the exceptions.)

So I started there first.

That is why I still want a Rotel RPM-10, Denon H2, Hitachi J3, et al.

Now, that being said, I do collect 1 piece units as well and was within a hairs breath of getting a local M70 before the seller discovered eBay. :-/ I have a beautiful TRK-8180E, Minty TRC-931 (hard square), Blockbuster, RX-5150, RC-M60 and others.

For me it's about having a diverse collection that truly covers the spectrum. All these units have a history and al serve a purpose to me. For carrying I'd never drag an M90, Bombeat 40, or CK-5F around anyway. Too damn heavy. It'd be a midline box regardless of style. And all look good t me. (Except the VINIX. :tease: )

I guess ultimately I prefer both. Just thought I'd explain. :-)

Generally speaking if I like a box, I like it.

But I think I'd lean toward the 'traditional' image of a boombox as a one-piece unit and I have to say my favourites encompass more 1's than 3's.

I definitely prefer one-piecers.
I do like the high end hifi manufacturers three-piecers however (such as my Pioneer, Technics, Sansui, Marantz and Denons), and; more as a rule to keep the size of my collection in check just as much as anything else, I do try to stay away from most 'normal' brand three-piecers. There are definitely some high spec Sharp, Panasonic and few others I still plan on picking up, however... plus of course one of my personal grails is a Philips Compo three-piecer.

Overall though, any big one-piecer sings it's irresistable siren's song to me each time I see one.

Rock On.

I agree with Ira, the only 3 pc box I had was the HK-9000 and that beast being as heavy as it was hardly found itself outside the house, the 880 went everywhere including riding the old 10 speed around town no hands holding the 880 firmly

The only people who have trouble wth component boxes are either clumsy or careless, vomit on them, or tend to let freinds "collupse" on them or vomit on them. :tease: :tease: :tease:

Honestly, I have NEVER had a problem with component boxes. And never met anyone who did carrying them around except to maybe need a Doans pill for their back after carrying a heavyweight around. :-D
