After seeing the soundesign with the fake equalizer :'-( , I have to ask: What are the poorest quality boombox brands you have come across, and why?

Conion and Lasonic, they are rubbish, send all your Conion's and Lasonic's to me. You don't need them.

Just kidding folks.

I just tossed an LG egg that had so many bad things about it I don't know where to start.

Funny post ... just about ANY boombox you'd find behind the counter at a retail pharmacy, like stated above: Lloyds, GPX, Emerson...

:agree: painting broad strokes on brands like that may mean you miss a good box so don't dismiss all boxes just because of a brand name, often those brand names are on somebody elses's good boxes.

In general I do agree that GPX, Yorx, Lloyds and others are generally low quality. There are so many crappy AKA names that this list could get very long.

So Australia is for old boomboxes what India and Pakistan are for old ships? You know, where they break ships at the beach?
Thats interesting. And thats what I like about this site, you´ll learn new things every day.

Oh and to answer the question: judging from my own radios the worst brands are Unisef and Levis.

Coby is pretty much the bottom. Then Yorx. Emerson and GPX are bit better. Don't know much about Lloyds. I previously had a bad opinion of Goldstar, but have seen a few nice ones.

Good info. As for goldstar, I have a 70's goldstar boombox with tv, and it is really good build quality. This one looks good too:

I keep seeing nice old Goldstars now a days, but back in the 80s when I worked at Woolworth's, all the Goldstar stuff seemed pretty cheesy. They also sold lots of Yorx stuff as well.

Just a word of caution: in the "heyday," some nasty brands (Yorx, GPX) put their AKA on some pretty decent boxes. It wasn't like it is today. Don't dismiss any classics just 'cause of their names.

As for Goldstar, they were a real (Korean) manufacturer (not just a name), and their '80's boxes could be very nice... including their AKA's. Goldstar is today's LG Electronics. A company to be reckoned with!

Ira... I assume you noticed that there's no tape deck in your Sonic, and that it's just a radio. A radio that LOOKS like a boombox, but isn't. But heck, for $2.25, I'd be happy with a nicely designed, empty box!!

Yeah, Yorx is garbage, but remember, the only good thing that Yorx ever put their name on was that 20/20 that Fatdog owns.

Emerson always gets dissed, but this is one of my favourites of theirs, if only for the fact there isn't another radio that looks like it:

In Australia some of the poorer rebadged units came in under Audiosonic, Aiko, TDJ and Voxson.

But as mentioned, there always seems to be some wheat amongst the chaff with all the budget brands.

Rock On.
