** What, an egg that ROCKS?! ** Panasonic Power Blaster **

Hi Guys,

Well I've been tempted lately to get one of those modern sub-$100 BT speakers to get that modern bassy sound (at least at low-medium volume levels). Did I buy one?? Of course not - they're over priced junk! :-)

So what did I get? A late 90s egg!! I know what you're thinking but stay with me. This is no ordinary egg. It's a pretty solidly built thing - probably around 6-7 kilos with batteries onboard.

How about:

10 watts RMS per channel?
Twin full logic decks (both auto reverse)?
Electronic tape deck door releases?
CD player with motorised tray?
Digital AM/FM tuner with presets?
Full function remote?
A 3.5mm proper AUX in?
5 preset equaliser settings?
'Sound Virtualizer' wide mode + bass reflex system?
High quality and beefy 6 ohm drivers?

Yep, this Panasonic RX-ED50 is packed to the gills with useful features.

It only needs 8 Ds + 4AAs to rock.

Picked up my slightly rough but fully working example on Gumtree for $45 with local pickup - (with remote). I mentioned that as the remote is essential for access to some features.

So for indoor use when sound quality is important, this Panny is really impressing the hell out of me!! It's a good way to get high quality MP3 or CD tracks onto chrome or metal tapes.

You certainly don't get much in modern tech for $45 AUD!

Beefy magnets on those drivers!! :-)IMG_3200.PNG

So if you want something compact that plays/records tapes, CD and AUX in + AM/FM digital tuner and will give your classics a rest, it's an option I can recommend (for indoor use where people can't see what you're cranking).

Thanks,

James..... :-)

I don't have one but I've listen to that egg a few times. Yes it's loud and really good sounding. Smart way to spend your $45 AUD for sure

I found a Japanese variant for for $10 last year, I even tried giving it away here but nobody wanted it bad enough to pay for shipping so I tore it apart  It was missing the remote. I still have the speakers from it (same size but 3 ohms), the deck, and other bits. The specs show it as more powerful but the heads were junk.

Interesting difference in weight without batteries (4.4kgs v 5.0 kgs).

Hang on, they are completely different models! The entire outer casing, position and layout of the controls etc make this an invalid comparison. Even the angle the speakers sit at (ED-50 face upwards) is different. The fact that the ED-55 is over a 1/2 kilo lighter means that the internals must be different too.

I've frequently seen these for sale in UK but I've been undecided about acquiring one until I heard more about the BB from a non-seller so you've helped with your post. I already have an RX-ED707 and a (better sounding) RX-ES30 and they both punch well above what I was expecting. I much prefer Panasonics of the Cobra ranges as I find them aesthetically pleasing with sound is good, the RX-ED50 doesn't seem to quite fit my visual expectations but, on the other hand, it's styling does represent a certain era of BB history.

If I can find a place for one that'll fit some nicely I may take the plunge sometime soon.

Thanks for the quick review, it's most helpful.

Nice find! Eggs can indeed sound really nice, but only indoors. Outdoors they just don't go loud enough.

If you want a modern blaster that's cheap but sounds decent both indoor and outdoor, the Ion Spectraboom is the way to go. For the price it's a very good deal, here in the US at least.

I have an RXDT95 full remote control and motion detector for music play. Six speaker double deck cassette with radio and CD player, line in and all. Even cassette loads automatically with remote control ( you have to put a cassette in there..)

Amazing unit.

It´s an excellent find, it´s not quite an egg hence it´s not egg-shaped, but looks more like a space ship. I have 2x Panasonic RX-ED77 and one Panasonic RX-ES30 from same series and i find them all just excellent, they sound well, weigh also well for a boombox and i´d gladly say that these were probably best boomboxes in this form factor on sale there, not taking in the Kaboom series. I highly recommend having one, especially RX-ED77 because of the cool cobra top and other cool features.

Oh my! RX-C45 is no Egg. That is an amazing little boombox with outstanding performance based on the size.

Hi Boomboxlover 48! I agree with you 100%, but I wasn't talking about the C45. I was talking about the RX-DS45. That's a DS not a C. The Rx-DS45 is indeed an egg. However its not super egg shaped in form. However in performance and features it is indeed super. Like many of the large eggs Panasonic made in the late, late 80's and early to mid 90's.If you get one of these you will be greatly surprised! Lots of near Bose guality sound and POWER!Plus a full function remote.Which as a guy I totally dig. These things weigh a ton and take bokoo batteries, and the sound is oh so succulent! Lions, tigers and bears oh my. They usually command a premium. Even the remotes by themselves can go for up to $50.00 somolians. So do yourself a flavor go on out and get one, you'll like it.
