Vienna trams fighting against snow

Wow, the last days the big snow came!
Much to do in the company to keep all lines working.
Just want to share a few pics from out mates, made in the snow.

Type "E1" at the circle line

Type "ULF" at the railroad station

Type "E2" at the center of grinzing (historical place)

It was a awesome ride in the snow

Are you using chemicals for the switches. There is no other way to keep em working properly i think. Damn back in 1989 i got my tram license in same weather. It was lot of stress. The rails where like ice skating park Back then the trams use to have a system which is trowing a sand in front of the wheels. Is that still the same ( didnt drove a tram since than) ?

Those trains are REALLY low to the ground....seems like that would be an issue with the snow.

Usual the switches are heated.
But if there is too much ice and snow, it does not work enough.

Yes, the sand throwing system is the same.
The modern ones (ULF means Ultra Low Floor) have a kompressor and very fine quarzsand, blown direct on the wheels.
The oldest type (E1) is out of the 60s, all will be sorted out the next 2-3years.
But some of them found a new home in hungary, poland, bulgaria and so on.
I love them, they are really "oldskool" :super:

I can't say that I'm a fan of the Winter, but really enjoyed the pics. As a kid, I used to watch the drivers on the Green Line trolleys in Boston and thought it was my destiny to drive one. Now I drive a pickup.
