So the other day I got an email for an upcoming local estate sale. I scrolled through the pictures of items to be sold, and saw this

I googled the model number and figured its worth a shot to go check out the sale on Saturday morning, so off I went. Not expecting it to still be there, my son and I strolled into the sale and it was still there along with another SHARP box. I checked em both out briefly, and saw the price for the 688 was only $20, and the other SHARP didnt have a price. So I asked and they said "Gimme $10 for the small one" So I did! So $30 for both. Not bad!

When I got home, the real unboxing began. The 688 is a 9 out of 10 cosmetically, BUT the left channel is out :-( There's a constant low hum coming from the left speaker. Both decks work, but began to chew my cassette tape, but I plan to get this box serviced and working 100%20171111_190827.jpg20171111_191034.jpg

Being that there is no AM/FM tuner, no antennas! Nakedness

The only flaw that I found, was this... Darn you Ben! The previous owner, Ben Clark engraved his name on the right side near the handle, other than that its pretty dam flawless.

The other $10 cassette player reminded me of my grammar school library days, and the name fits it, "The Educator"

Needless to say I'm very happy with the score, well worth the money I think.

Damn dude that 688 is clean. I bet the channel out is just a record bar clean or function button, really common to sharps. Also if the decks are rotating but chewing tapes it's probably the Capitan tire common to sharps. Bit of the correct size fuel line should fix it.

Great scores bro :)

Thamks T, I will do some homework on how to clean the record bar, I've never done it before. I've never replaced capstans either but its never too late to learn ;-) Thanks for the advice bro

Yeah so strange... never realised that these had no tuner of any sort for years. Just a big ol tape deck.
Yes I never knew that these did'nt have a tuner. I just bought it so fast that I didnt even check! Just double cassette, Line in, Line out, and Phono inputs in the rear. I guess it was built primarily for dubbing tapes.

Absolutely, that's the point, a kind of unique machine.

Yep, Bro, neither did I.
There are still "tons" of GF-666, and the like, GF-555, nothing much special already since everybody know them for ages,
but this beast, no radio, huh! :jawdrop:
Indeed, it's a Pro tape recorder in a sense.

Think so too.

Me also. I kept looking at it almost seeing a GF-555 but it just looked a bit 'odd' and I couldn't put my finger on it. Now I'm seeing a gigantic Walkman! :-D

Good catches, though and at a price difficult to beat.

Haha, yes, I giant walkman indeed, but HEAVY! Even without batteries this thing weighs a ton and is built like a tank, very solid. Thanks M.O.M. ;-)

Damn... nice finds!
I wish we had good estate auctions here.
Thanks bro, I've been to plenty of sales out here in my area and usually come up with zero, so it was nice to finally come across a great buy for once :-)
