chris just mentioned that he has only seen a few of the gorgeous 9990

and we have so many posts here about how rare and GREAT are the Tosh40 and the S90-
and i have a MacKenzie :-O --such a RARE WX-1 model that i have seen ONLY ONE !!!

so,,,,,,,,,,,, :hmmm: :hmmm:
does this tosh mystery actually mean that the toshiba marketing division was a grand FAILURE ?????????
and that -- in those days
JVC and Sanyo owned the big boomer market --
to the point that these gorgeous and beautiful sounding tosh machines never competed at the retail stores ?

perhaps ....the s90 and the 9990 did not have that badass ' street look' ,,,
but the T40 had all that times 10 !!!

surely there had to be
production numbers --to make them $$ feasible --
what...........do we think happened to all these ??

any guesses

They are all sleeping in some basements.

Soon the word will spread that some wackos (us) look for them and pay good money and all of a sudden, people will dig them out

The 9990SM was only sold in Japan, so that limits the production numbers

This is the count I know of....

I had 2
Monolithic has 1
There is a video of one on youtube
and I have seen 1 other one beat to hell on yahoo japan

That's 5 that I know of :-O

I actually love all this mystery around Toshiba. How many bombeat 14 for example ? I ve seen one picture in the net ( from Bulgaria) Rado (member bondar) gave me one in exchange and was feeling so bad so i give her back to him and so on...... Not many SX1000 in existence ? Looks even less than BB40 :hmmm: . And damn - i swear - i love this boomer and there is no way i would sell or trade mine....
Love my bombeat 12 mkII and never saw another one :hmmm: . All around Toshiba boomers is in the hug of the fog .
And that is what fascinate me. I dont care about grail statuses and so crap ( sorry to say that ) . Dont give a dime about the value of the boomer on the eGay or so. Most interesting for me is the mystery.
What it can be... It can be a lot IMHO. Toshiba like a big company can made some limited editions of different boomers just to keep his name known in the segment. I think that most of those series was never sold everywhere around the globe. Just small quantities to keep the Toshiba myth alive. Most of the Toshiba brand sound stuff were used mostly in the studios back in the 70and 80s. So, no real point to get deep into the flooded from other mainstream brands ( i personally never saw JVC or Sanyo pro level sound equipment ). Same tactic at this time from Pioneer and Technics (panny brand anyway) and other with pro level goodies at the time. Than the end of the 80 s and early 90 made em like everybody else - to produce lot of crap for sheep like consumers . Sadly till now days  .
Anyway. WTF? = i love old Toshiba boomers

thats interesting stormsven ....
-----------------------------

btw --i cant truly join the limited edition ' japan only' theory -
cuz that little island had over 100 million customers ' in house'
and they were the most ardent electronics fans in the world

I have in mind more like selling different models in different parts of the world. I dont believe in "just japan" theory either. Lot of them have 220 v so this theory is pointless.

I've seen numerous Toshiba 9990's on yahoo over the years, I've seen a few Mackenzie's too, one very recently.

Maybe Toshiba's distribution channels were different to other manufacturers in the 80s?

I think Max is right though, the Toshiba models look so high end they've probably been seen as 'too nice' to throw out
and are still in people's basements and sheds.

Rock On.

Yummy yummy yummy miami!!! :-D I LOVE all those toshibas, especially that sexy SX1000 that I am due to own shortly...
I am a believer in the idea that Japan had many many lovely sexy boomboxes, but the theory spread about those people us that the majority of them see everything as disposable and worthless once an updated product has come out. I think that there are countless thousands of beautiful boxes over there, crushed in landfill or waiting in sodden alleys for collection. I know the second one is true because I've had friends return from there with stories of storeys-high piles of electronic waste awaiting pickup. A tiny majority of folks (again, my thoughts) see these lovely things as worth more than disposal, an an even tinier amount see them as worthy of scavenging. So the few that come up for auction are true survivors in my eyes. They're really worth grabbing, never mind the postage cost, because the more international sales they have, the more will be salvaged. I hope I'm right.

I have been seeing lots of Japanese radio on eBay with $190 shipping with a sale price of $30, so for $220 you can have a nice Japanese radio. Got my eye on a few myself  Toshiba's included
