How Long Have You Been a Collector

Nearly 3 years

What Got You Started collecting

I built a big shed (man cave) in my garden and being a pretty retro type of guy i wanted somthing a bit more "me" than an ipod dock.
So i bought an Amstrad 3 piecer on ebay and while looking for info on it i came across this place, i still remember the first collection pics i saw was nz-booms garage and that was it, i was sold on boxes.

What was the First Box You Got

Well i had a few cheapies when i was kid which i cant really remember but since collecting the first was an Amstrad 8090 3 piece followed quickly by a Hitachi TRK-8800 (my first 1 piece box).

How Many Boxes Do You Own

Currently i have 30 boxes, i would proberly like to get the collection down to maybe 20-25 max. If i had never sold any i would maybe have 45ish.

What Are Amoung The Favourites In Your Collection

My top 3 in reverse order are Audio Sonic TBS 8900 from ebay, my M70 from member StereoMad and in 1st place by a mile is my Rising 20-20 from member Stormsven.

Do You Have a box You Regret Selling/Trading

Mixed feelings on this, My Conion C100. Always regret selling a bit because it really was all i was hoping it would be and im unlikely to ever get another BUT i didnt really use it much and the guy who got is a total boombox nut, loved it way more than me and gave me a really really good deal.

Have You Ever Found a Great Box In The Wild (or for peanuts)

Ive got a couple of nice boxes from guys at work fairly cheap, but no, ive never found an M90 at a yard sale for £5 :sadno:

Is There Anymore Boxes You Would Really Still Like

Loads, but top of the list is a big lasonic or a discolite.

Bling or Bass

Bling. Lights, buttons, switches and chrome. But it does have to sound fairly reasonable or whats the point.

Have You Learned Anything since Collecting

Mechanically, very little, im totally clueless
Buying, be patient, try and get quality over quantity, only spend what you can afford.
Boomboxery and Stereo2Go are both great forums with funny, helpfull and generous folks
Also what on earth did i use the internet for before i got into boomboxes :hmmm:

Thanks all, hope you enjoyed the read

i started collecting 6 years and 4 months before you guys were sperms

reason --love music --and whats cooler than portable music  :surf:

my first 'box ' was a little zenith MONO radio with AM only --
it was before cassettes or fm were invented

i own about 100 real good boomers and about 30 that need repairs

my fav is the dual 10" woof job -- custom built to a compact 30" wide
and looks like a stereo version of the jvc rc 550 -- its near complete
if/when i ever get the 550 side bars

i regret none of my 200 or more box sales --as long as the new owners are happy-

i gave up shopping in the wild about 10 years ago -
but once -- a kind neighbor left a free panny 50/50 on my porch :angelic:

still want the 50 or so rare good boxes that i dont even know exist --yet --
really --they may be a 1000 models out there -in some country --which we all never have seen

most of what i have learned is that collecting is 12 times more fun --
when we have this site and good friends ton share them with

now all be advised...

I agree, cool idea, and really cool to get to know more about IAP.

I think the last member to do one should nominate the next on a fairly random basis

Thank you for all you great and positve comments.
Tbh i was in two minds about the post as i wasnt sure if it was a bit dumb. If i had been on my old laptop and had access to more of my pics i would of liked to include a few pics along the way.

Thanks ira for having a go.
Anybody else, please feel free to add, take away, swap anything you like :-D

How Long Have You Been a Collector

About 4 years

What Got You Started collecting

I was talking with a friend of mine and reminiscing about “The Good Old Days” and my Jr High and High School years and started thinking about how I used to have a radio with me every waking moment. So, just for fun I searched the internet and found http://pocketcalculatorshow.com where I saw the first picture of my old blaster the Lasonic TRC-920. This led me to http://www.stereo2go.com where I started meeting some other enthusiasts. Then I started searching for pictures of radios online and found some really great high resolution pictures from our great member Monolithic. His eye for the radio’s and the way his pictures made the radio’s themselves into an art form put these things into a whole new light for me. From there on out, I just wanted more and more. Then member gsbadbmr turned me on to Boomboxery and I have been here ever since.

What was the First Box You Got

My love of music started early with my first 45 rpm turn table when I was 7 or 8 years old. My mother was a huge Elvis fan and along with the Beach Boys and AM Radio I spent my youth searching for music and ways to play it louder. I moved up the chain from a small AM Radio my mother let me use, to a portable AM/FM hand held radio, to a cassette mono AM/FM player then when I was 15 years old I finally made the leap to manhood when I purchased my Lasonic TRC-920 new!

How Many Boxes Do You Own

Right now I have 29 stereo’s. Not sure how many I would have if I hadn’t sold any.

What Are Amoung The Favourites In Your Collection

Of course I love my TRC-920, my TC-935 that I got from BMoney is still a favorite to take out and blow minds with. The Eddie Van Halen M70 tribute box is lots of fun and BLASTS hard core. I love my GE 3-5286A I got from Reli and my Realistic SCR-8 I got from Sinister because they remind me so much of my teen years.

Do You Have a box You Regret Selling/Trading

There are a few I wish I hadn't sold, but I have gained others that I never would have EVER dreamed I would have owned, like the TRC-975 I got from BMoney and the J1 I got from BlasterPunk

Have You Ever Found a Great Box In The Wild (or for peanuts)

I have found a few small radio’s in the wild. No Super Grails….but anything I find in the wild, big or small gives me that real excitement. It’s a real adrenaline rush. Since I have been collecting, I have some friends and family out looking for me and they are very surprised on how hard these things are to find!

Is There Anymore Boxes You Would Really Still Like

OH GOD YES! C100 is still on the list and any time I see a Blaster posted here on Boomboxery that I have never seen that catches my eye and makes me drool. That then becomes my next goal.

Bling or Bass

The obvious answer is both, but some times you get one or the other. My biggest attraction has always been silver one piece boxes with lots of switches and knobs! The analog era was interesting to me. Long before everything was shrunk to a chip and all functions controlled by one button or a touch screen, there was analog. I was always impressed how engineers could come up with useable improvements like Music Search, Dolby Sound, Battery Level, VU Meter’s and Soft Touch Cassette Mechanisms without the use of a computer chip. These were complicated precise instruments. So when I see a silver radio with a TON of buttons, my mind says “High Tech”. It makes me think of the dash board of the Space Shuttle or the Apollo Capsules. It just makes me want to know what all those buttons and switches do.

Have You Learned Anything since Collecting

I have learned a TON about these radios from my own time working on them and from our great members! I have customized them, restored them, painted them and most of all BLASTED them. I was reminded that when people come together on a common passion that we can all put the nonsense of the world aside, even just for a little while and enjoy each other as human beings….and to me, that’s what boomboxes are all about….sharing music and being together.
