I found one for sale near me, it looks like its all there, the guy says everything works. Obviously id test it. But its pretty dirty looking. Some of the text has faded/worn off. He's asking $250 firmI was curious if thats a good price, what these are worth and how good they sound. Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

UPDATE: I got to today, we'll see if it was worth it after I clean it up, but here it is.

The best mid sized box out there IMO...get one and you'll not regret it! :) There's a reason why most collections have at least one

Don't worry about the rubbed text. Letrasets are available that match the original font on JVCs of the period so closely that nobody would ever know you'd been restoring that area of the set. They stick well to typical boombox plastic too, just use a tiny drop of nail polish to fix the characters or they'll rub off again.

Now get out there and buy the thing before someone else beats you to it! ;-)

Wow that's a pretty immediate one-way consensus. And nobody said $250 was a bad price... Assuming everything actually does work though. Well i guess ill try to convince my wife to let me.:)

250 is a good price considering mint examples can sell over double that price. great box i miss mine dearly

Funny thing is, they commonly fetch $350 on Epay even if one of the functions doesn't work or the tape deck needs belts. And if everything works and it looks great, expect it to hit $500+ if the auction ends on a Sunday night when everyone's home.

Personally I would never pay that much for a box with sliders, no matter how good it sounds. Can't stand sliders, they suck for indoors use because you have to be really careful when adjusting them or else you'll get a burst of unwanted volume that everyone can hear. And having left + right separate volume is just dumb IMHO. A balance knob is a much better way of doing it. Plus sliders often dry out and stop working because the carbon traces inside wear down.

Nice box though

Hey...may be a silly question, but is an RC-M70JW any different from an RC-M70??? The one Im looking at is the "JW"

JW has shortwave I believe.
They all do don't they? But the JW also has an extra (trawler band) SW spread in place of one of the other AM bands that Euro-spec sets had, LW, IIRC.
And is the JW the one that has RCAs instead of or in addition to a DIN connection? That's certainly true of the M 70's baby brother RC-656.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to look at/purchase it this weekend. I already am loving my 931's, I'm guessing I should like the sound of this too, I like it's pretty clean look more every time I look at it.

The jw version is international version with voltage selection.
The C version was units destined for Canada
The L version was units destined for Europe.
European version has the din connectors for line in/ out. I think Japanese version is the only one without shortwave bands.
Best of luck. Be sure and test all the sliders for volume bass and treble. These are notorious for bad sliders and cleaning most often doesn't fix them. Otherwise a great box. I have had about five of them and I finally settled into the M-71 model which is the gold version

Oooo... Gold huh? Thanks for the tips/info everyone, I'll try my best to test everything I can think of, might even bring some batteries, and if I get it, I'll be sure to post some pics!!!

When you test it, don't be afraid to CRANK IT UP! Listen for blown speakers. These things get loud. Really loud. Sometimes they have been abused & you want to be sure it's in good shape.

At least that's what I would tell him, right after all the blood drains out of his face. I had someone try to sell me a busted up one for $250.00. Find everything wrong with it and adjust your price line accordingly. Bring something nice, like one of your other boxes, to compare it to. Should sound better, not worse! Like Joe said, don't pay too much. If anything, the more you test and compare, the more likely he is to realize you know your shiat.

The batteries are an excellent idea. ;-)

Now, GO GET IT!

Just called him about it, sounds dead-set on $250, but also says antennas are missing, are there comparable replacements for these? I guess have "plans" tonight so it'll be tomorrow or Sunday. :/
