think i read somewhere on the net a new Panasonic rx 5500 retailed for about 750.00 plus tax back in 1980 that serious money for a portable radio!!

Yes I think that Crown briefcase box was the ultimate in terms of expense. That's about $1,000 for a portable radio cassette player. Which isn't even very big.
I wonder how much was the biggest Yamaha boombox when new?

as for MSRP --i think ledmeter is correct -- a few big high-end yamahas were priced at over 1000 -
and the early aiwa ' carry-compound' series were about 2500 !! at new reatail

I wonder what the biggest price increase is for a box that was cheapish back in the day, to what it would cost now.
Or whats held its value best over 30 years

not positive of the retail price but the jvc pc-55 was one of the most expensive boxes of all new. and the sony fh 3 and fh 5 and cfs 9000 were not cheap either .

also most of the line of sansui's cost some big money too.

I personally know JVC PC-55 prices,I bought mine new!:)
Retail when they first came out late of 84' was $999.00!!:0
Then they went on sale for $799.00.I got mine for $599.00 as it was the demo but mint with all papers and manual!:) Got mine spring 85'.:)

was at an all time low actually
The Y145000 would be more like 580$

(I owe a big ups to my dad who has been an "official" technician since 1964 after turning 18 (at 16/17 he would make his money under the table)...he worked on all of these as a long time technician for AAFES as well as the civilian side...)

Could go on but why? Heck I remember going into the Lerche Stores as a kid in Stuttgart and seeing Telefunkens in the ridiculous realm...even at 4.50DM to the dollar at the time it was scary. :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop: Even mediocre boxes were going for dumb prices given the performance at the peak of the era.

That's 'cause Lasonics are built like crap. I do have a deep respect for Lasonic restorers for this very reason. They are probably the most problematic & chaotic restoration challenge out there. Pick 1 up & it feels like a helium balloon. He-he!!
