The longest road JVC-M90 is finally fixed

Back in 2019 Boomboxery member Katsa made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a JVC-M90. He packed it up, shipped it to me when I was living in Italy and I went straight to work cleaning it up and servicing it. At the time I posted a thread 10 YEARS IN THE MAKING. With the help of many members, especially DOCS, I managed to get the deck working. But sadly, it was only temporary. Since then, I moved back to the USA and thought about how I might get this thing working again. I knew it was never 100% after I got the deck working last time, so I wasn't totally shocked when it stopped. I kind of figured there was something in the deck, separate from the issues that I did fix that made it work. What that problem was, I couldn't figure out. But I felt if I repeated what I had previously done (which was a ton of work) that the deck would most likely fail again. I tried to reach out to a repairman I've been working with for around 15 years, but his business shut down. But after a few months of investigative work, I found his new number, reached out and found he indeed shut the doors on his store front, but was still interested in doing repair work. I took him the M90 and a few weeks later, I received it back. About 10 years ago I had him repair the deck on my Clarertone 7979 and it has been an absolute work horse since then, with all features 100% working and the speed perfectly dialed in. I can now say, after 16+ years collecting, I have a fully functional M90 and she is a peach. Thanks again to everyone who contributed one way or another to make this happen.

You need a lot of patience in this game! Glad you got it sorted Chris

Thanks man. This radio, as everyone knows is so complicated. I put in a solid effort, but it was over my head. Was really happy to get it repaired and working. I have been torture testing it. Playing it every day. Every old cassette I take out, I rewind to the start, play both sides, use the song skip functions. So far everything is working.

Glad to see you post again, Chris! Also, what a nice way to end the M90 story - fully functioning!!:chris920::surf::beer2:
Thanks Bobby. I had a great weekend out with the M90. A friend hit me up, he was having some people over for a pool party / BBQ. I texted him back, asked if he would mind if I brought a radio and some cassette's. Never heard back, so I did it anyway. I show up with the M90 and two cassette suitcases. It was a group of locals, people that grew up in the San Fernando Valley here in Los Angeles. They were all here through the Hollywood Hair Metal days and that's the exact music I brought, which included one suitcase of ultra rare demo's, one hit wonder bands and early recordings along with a second case of all the big Metal bands and they loved it. None of this stuff is ever played on the radio anymore and there is literally no where to hear it, so we spent the day poolside, people picking out tapes they want to hear next, ect.

The beauty part is, the M90 performed flawlessly. A true test of the cassette mechanism. FF, RWD, Play, all day on batteries. I had it set with Loudness ON, treble and bass at 12 o'clock neutral, Noise reduction "Super ANRS" ON, volume set to half way up and it sounded amazing. Crystal clear, no tape hiss, full bodied bass.

Seeing people enjoying full albums, not just Spotify singles, hearing them yell out "OMG, I haven't heard this song in years" and watching the girls wiggle to the beat, pool side is exactly what I remember these machines being built for.

My buddy hosting the party told me that he was happy I brought it as his Bluetooth speakers battery had failed and he didn't have a way to play any music. He told me at always bring a radio in the future, and I will!
