Ha ha, nice one. When i started boombox collecting, about 10 years ago (ish), holy grail was a good saying, as, some of these boxes, seemed to be unobtainable. Later on "holy grail", lost it`s meaning for me. I do, still think of the odd box as a holy grail. The main one, being my champagne bombeat 40. I doubt, if another one will surface. When i owned it, it didn`t have any special meaning to me. It was only after, i realised, in fact, it was a (HOLY GRAIL).

Yeah, the term "holy grail" has become quite hackneyed, especially on eBay. Even some of the butt-ugliest POS Yorx monos are "holy grails" on eBay.    I think it should be more of a personal term to describe the one boombox you've been looking for, but still haven't been able to find. My two bits.

By the way, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of the funniest movies of all time.

Yeah, that term has been ground down to a nub :-/

When I first join the Boombox Movement I was like :w00t: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? I thought, "Oh My, if some one is referring to a radio as a 'HOLY GRAIL' it really must be something special" which was of course followed by "I Must Have One"

Now people call everything a Holy Grail

Just so we are all on the same page....ONLY...the radio's that I have for sale are Holy Grails

IMO a grail should be one box that you consider the ultimate box ... as people have said above. Its just when people say they bought 6 grails or have 4 grails left on their list that the term gets bastardised.

Not that I can talk ... I still don't have anything that even resembles a grail. But I have only bought 2 boxes on ebay and I spent less than 50 each time ... the rest have been captured in the wild. Hard to find a big loud box out there .... one day though.

I don't see the problem with this, I think some might be under a misinterpretation of the word. Holy Grail is a bit of a cliche, but the actual word 'grail' is
something I don't have a problem with.

From Merriam Webster:

grail noun \ˈgrāl\

Definition of GRAIL
1 capitalized : the cup or platter used according to medieval legend by Christ at the Last Supper and thereafter the object of knightly quests
2: the object of an extended or difficult quest

Obviously definition one is not appropriate to boombox collecting, but definition 2 seems perfectly fine and accurate, to me, to use in regards
to a lot of the radios in my collection I consider grails, personal or otherwise. I've spent years hunting for some, to me that's the text book definition
of what grail means.

Rock On.

:hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm: See when you say it like that it make perfect sense....

When I think about the radio's I have and I think about which ones MIGHT be grails, I think of what others might consider them to be...not what I think them to be. I would think others to look at what I have and say my 975 is and my GE isn't....not the case for me....in my mind the GE, SCR8 and 920 are. Because those were personal quest's to achieve, not because they are super rare or super desirable to someone else.

Does this make any sense at all?

Grail should really be a personal definition and nothing else

The M90 and M70 aren't on my grail list, cuz they just don't do anything for me. They would just take up space.

Also, when it comes to rarity, I don't think that means anything either. Many rare boxes are POS's that sound like tin cans.

Take the Bombeat 40 for example.....Yeah it's rare, and yeah it looks great, but how many people have actually played with one? What other boomboxes is it equal to in terms of sound? How come nobody answers this? Does it sound as good as an M90, or even just an M70? I kinda doubt it, based on my experiences with Toshibas. But I'm willing to be proven wrong.

Hell, I have a box that I'm quite sure is rarer than that, but if I put it up on Ebay I doubt it would get more than $50....

The bb40, to me, is easily a match for the m90. It`s hard to see how, as, the tape deck is so basic, compared to the m90`s 2-motor logic deck. It must be something to do with the amp, matched to good speakers. I was sceptical about the 40, when i got mine, but, it got played, more than the 90, purely because, i preferred the sound of it. I wonder, what ira`s thoughts are?

my thoughts are that the tosh 40 sure is a grail  :-D
in any color --

the amp does not have the m90 power --
so--its sounds about 87% as strong as the m90 -

WHICH IS GOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
