I Am Legend
recently --we have threads that mention the marvelous bass response of such famous greats as the s90 . m90 , rx6400, fh7, kabooms, 680s .
etc -- and :agree:

but .............. ' when you get right down to it '

THE #1 deepest bass comes from the less famous honeycomb woofs
of the pioneer ck 5 , 7 & 11 series

No way.

I have just restored a CK-5, and the bass is good, but the Panasonic DT680 is still better.

I had a Sony FH-808R, and this was hands down the best portable(ish) stereo I've ever heard.

The Pioneer CK is good, but doesn't have enough power to fill the room with bass. Also, the open design of the speakers is very sensitive to room placement.

Well, did you have THIS AMP? The one on the bottom?

And did you have THESE SPEAKERS? The ones below that handle 70wpc?

I'll bet the Pioneer woofers have a lower free-air resonant frequency or 'Fs' than the cheaper paper cones that were prolific in the eighties. This would give the speaker an overall warmer tone & more natural bass enhancement. You might get a tight 60-120Hz punch from most large blasters but I haven't experienced the Pioneers that were mentioned so I can't weight in on the subject of DEEP bass. I do know it's hard to get deep bass from D-Cell audio. Even large blasters with 8 0r 10 inch cans will have a flat response down to about 80-100Hz & then the bass rapidly declines in the lowest octaves(20-60Hz) due to speaker size, motor mass & cheap paper construction of the cones used back in the eighties.

Still, there is one difference people tend to forget about :hmmm:

The famous M90 and S90 are one-piecers.
When I want deep bass to annoy my neighbours, I fire up my 3 way Teufel speakers BUT if I wanna go out on the street and kick it oldschool with 10 Ds, you can forget systems like the Pioneer CK or Sony FH series imho.

PLUS M90 and S90 got the looks :breakdance:

I thought we were talking about systems that run on batteries!

I know what you mean about 'feeling' the bass with the CK woofers, I just think the mid-bass kindof overpowers the audible bass on the CK-5F.

Also think the Panasonic had deeper bass than the Telefunken 1M.

I Am Legend
my ck5 uses 10 D cells
its a very compact 22" x 9"

agree -- its not a yankee stadium filler :-) -- its not a big bunch of noise

but
not even the best kabooms put out this kind of bass
-------------------------------------

its like this :::::

when one sits directly in front of it --at quiet // medium volumes..

one hears & feels the kinda WTF distant thunder- that makes ones nuts smile
:-D :-D

Does anyone have a photo of inside those speakers? Is it just a traditional round speaker that's glued to a square foam surround?

That driver is exteremely unique. The big tall one is 3-way, The squarer one is 2-way. Because the cones go all the way to the flange, they fill up space that round speakers can not = much larger surface area. Or a much larger speaker in smaller size than round speakers. The round driver you see in the middle is the mid driver. So if I'm not mistaken it's not a round speaker driving a square panel.

That's correct. The round mid driver is on a separate suspension system than the larger rectangular woofer.
