Hiya

I've read of this symptom on a faulty Philips D 8634 up for sale, sorry I can't tell you any more than this and I'm not asking anyone to stick their neck out as any other factors are unknown but is this a fairly common symptom on an older deck and (at a pure guess) may a fix to this be quite basic/simple/parts based? Don't worry, no legal action can be expected for a wrong guesstimate! :-D

"...cassette plays a tape but wont rewind/fast forward or eject til the tape gets to the end... but it sounded ok when playing"

Thanks.

on these phillips deck sometimes they have gears instead of belts , if it has 2 belts the belt that controls the rew/ff might be slipping .

Okey dokey, got that. If the belt is slipping or has become strethched due to age, does this mean there's insufficient tension for FF/REW/Eject? If it has gears (noob guesswork here), can I assume that there's slippage, misalignment or springs/something mechanical has loosened or otherwise come adrift therefore could/should be put back/relocated/whatever?

I know this isn't anything like a grail box but it's looking very cheap so may take a chance to improve the few skills I have for now.

yes if there are belts , more than one , one can slip even if the other still seems ok. if it has gears then they could be stripped out . they did not use the highest quality plastic for these gears and they wear out or become brittle. some decks have a lockout meaning if the tape mech is engaged in any way it will not allow the door to open.

Ah, gotcha, I feel a little more knowledgeable now. Thank you for the info and help, JVC Floyd.

Yup these have a belt drive but a series of gears for the deck rwd and fwd, these gears get brittle with age and can break. The rwd fwd is controlled by a large cog with a smaller one attached if i remember right and they do break at this age. They are repairable tho if you can find a gear or get one 3d printed.

Thanks, T-STER for your wise words. After reading all the contributions here I'll give this a miss and practice on something else that may be more worthwhile.
