man I have been after one of these for a long time.. so beautiful.. and sounds soo good.. got lucky on the Bay for once.. made an offer and it was accepted.. I was planning to mod it like the Panny 5250.. but I just cant.. it is such a classy box.. and it's in fantastic condition.. did I mention it sounds like a dream? smooth bass.. classy highs.. this gorgeous Panny will go with me to my grave.. the pictures show her sans cleaning.. I cant wait to get her in tip top shape.. (even though it looks and sounds great as is).. cleaning inside and out.. this is why Panasonic back in the day was superior.. making excellent boomboxes like these.. there's one on the Bay now.. hopefully one of you guys will get it.. worth every penny..

Congratulations!! This is such a high end box!
The sound, for it's size, is virtually unmatched by any other in the same weight division.
I nearly fell over the first time I heard one, you don't expect that kind of sound stage
from a box of it's size.

Rock On.

Totally agree with Rick, Congratulations!!! And you got a wonderfully minty fresh one too!

thanks guys.. having owned gosh.. at least 200 boxes.. this ones a keeper.. much heavier than I expected.. but still manageable.. thought they left the batteries in it! aye Glue I was shocked by how awesome it sounds too.. I normally don't carry boxes out in public.. but i'm going to with this beauty.. she deserves to be seen! not hidden away on a shelf.. I will pose her with some of my friends.. should be a blast!

agree with all --
it has ' shades' of the wonderful sounding RX7000 -
an awesome accomplishment for such a small box

Does it really sound that good? I never really looked at these, I thought they were low-end units. Now I'm curious...

well I tore her down to give her a good cleaning.. damn this thing had to be living the life of a hermit.. hardly and dust internally.. in fact it's in terrific shape.. hardly a mark on it.. I think the previous owner must have used it a few times and put it in storage.. what luck to find one in near mint condition.. the reason why it's so heavy? the cassette deck.. it has to weigh 3 pounds on it's own! all metal chassis and it looks like a work of art.. probably wont change the belts.. not a fan of cassettes.. I wouldn't use any so might leave it as is.. I took an internal pic to see if anyone's curious.. man did my ass luck out or what!

While we can all agree that big radios with MASSIVE center dust covers look great the 5085 exudes a similar effect with tiny dust covers. It's classy, respectful and burly all at the same time. Makes the speakers look HUGE!

You got a fine example brother!

Love the clean design . And the LEDs pattern makes it one of the most interesting boomers imho.
Congrats dude.

Now that appeals to my aesthetic sensibilities. Well built, features that are useful such as NR, no frills, no Liberace-friendly design details, just a clean looking box and now we learn that they sound good too. Oh well, added to wish list. :-)

The whits speakers and purple trim gives this box a look of elegance

I would click that link, but the last time I accidentally looked at a Bollywood film on youtube, it lasted four hours and nothing else got done that day. ;-)

listening to her right now.. gonna take it to work tonight.. the peeps at my job are so lucky.. they get to see a lot of my collection.. well my collection isn't that big anymore but still.. I mean they get to see my Panandriod RX-5250 in action.. and they got to see the Sharp GX-M10.. and I know for a fact I was the first in the U.S. that had one back in Feburary.. they just don't know how lucky they are :-D and of coarse I get to blast them proper at my job.. unlike at my apartment with it's paper thin walls.. looking/listening to the 5085 as I write this.. man she's sweet.. lottery won!

oh one more thing.. that satisfying crack you get from the screws when you know your the first one to open a 30 year old boomer..

redbenjoe

Panasonic had a knack for well balanced overall good to great sounding mid-size boxes and yours is no exception.
