so i finally got round to finishing my latest sharp. introducing my 9494.
you may have read my white speaker advice post. well this is what i was doing. was in alright condition when got. scratchy volumes, covered in dust and grime, yellow-ish speakers. just the usual. stripped it down completely. tried to get all dust/fluff out.unfortunately when i pulled the 18cm stickers off all the paint fell off so found a picture of them and got some reprinted. ended up double washing back and front. painted speakers. i think they look great. didnt run on batteries when got, wasnt sure what i was meant to do, so i got both springs and the bit the wire is on out, gave them a bit of a scrub with super fine sandpaper. now works on batteries. is that what meant to do? worked for me. bonus.
gave everything a contact cleaner workout, put back together, buttons/switches cleaned, changed belts. all fired up. but cassette has issues. i think it is this (what is it?)

under the little cog the belt is on. rubber seems to be worn so much the wheel doesnt touch it.

What are the tape issues? Capstan rubber tyre issue?

Nice machine. Sounds like the classic capstan rubber issue you get on 99% of Sharp's...there are many mentions of this in the forum, have a quick search and you'll find lots of tips but it's not difficult to sort

Yep, you're going to have to pull it apart again to fix that capstan sleeve. Pity you didn't do a search re servicing that deck. It's probably the most talked about issue with the 9090-9696 decks.

You need a small piece of 5mm tubing with a 2mm ID. You will also need to lubricant the bearings the capstan runs in. Just be careful you don't get the machine oil on the tubing. It is straight forward if you know how.

Nice looking 9494 BTW - it came out great!

Hey VP, nice clean up these are beauty's. As everyone has said the issue will definitely be the capstan sleeve. On the end of the fly wheel pin and under the little housing is a perished bit of rubber. You have to pull the flywheel through, situate the bit of new rubber in the housing then push the flywheel pin through again. Its easy to do, just a few minutes really.

The measurements jimmy gave are correct, i use RC fuel line or these weird little bead things that are soft rubber. Both work a treat. I still have enough fuel line to fix more GF's than i'll ever have so if you need a piece let me know and i'll post you out a length enough to do quite a few!

thanks jimmy. im happy. well i didnt think anything was wrong. i was actually playing a rolling stones tape on it when was putting the knobs an things back on, and it just got slower then finally stopped. played maybe 10min. took cover back off and watched an came to conclusion it was where i was watching. t-ster photo is what i think. can see groove in the rubber.

yes thats where i was watching and saw a groove in said rubber. i would have drawn a circle to but i cant work out how to do. ha. think i need to upgrade my 5yr old computer.
i found a post (check upwards a few of my replies) ill be in the city this weekend so im gonna go in to a model shop and see if i can find some tube that would suit. if not it would be awesome if you happy to get some to me. you do realize im in new zealand? little bit excessive. see what happens after weekend. cheers

Be careful you don't use the much more common 5mm tubing with a 3mm ID - it won't grip the capstan properly and will slip. You need to check that the internal hole of the tubing is centred well other wise you may end up with some warble on playback.

The old tubing will have turned into a black, sticky mess so extensive cleaning of the capstan and bearing housing will be required - it takes a bit of work to get the black stuff out.

Don't try to manually remove the tape counter pulley from the capstan - just pull the flywheel out and let the pulley slid off in the process - and don't loose the little washer that the flywheel spins on.

That's about it! the rest of the job is pretty much as per any other tape deck.
