Hi all,I'm finally getting around to restoring my GF-9696Z I got from
Jeff(JLF) about a year or so ago.

Well first of all mine was missing it's handle which I now have.
The studs are snapped a little so I'll measure the distance on my
9494 studs and make a little bridge to make it the right height.

This was a bitch, took a hour to fully dismantle as some of the darn screws
were crusted bad! One on the voltage selector snapped a little plastic
piece with it but not hard to fix and is on the inside, not noticeable.

There was some definately corrosion on the inside front and In my
battery compartment to.
Photos have been taken, load later this week, please be patient.

I've already cleaned all the switch caps and felts and all internals!!
Coming out good!
Now tonight the 'The Jimmy Bath' for the back!! :surf:

Then tomorrow I'll start rebuilding the handle posts and do some reinforcing
of the handle area.
Then I'll clean the front,
Cassette just needs new belts, seems all good besides that, cleaning and
lubing that also.

Jimmy, got that front panel off, just kind of in there tight.
Taking a break right now, been at it for 2.5 hours today, lots of progress
so far! :choco: :-)
I'm really going to take my time on this and don't worry-parts are away from
any avalanches or destruction!! :-D

Thanks Jimmy, great talking to you tonight. :-)

Progress so far:
Top plate cleaned and scrubbed as well as the back! This thing was seriously
filthy!! :-O
I also have internals all cleaned and ready to install into back tomorrow.
Back came out nice, still a little corrosion in battery compartment but will
get it all out tomorrow with different cleaner.

Just going to take speakers and front wires and pots off tomorrow and
give the front a bath. Also cleaning the front dial tuner piece!

Then I can fix s couple of small cracks I have and reinforce from back with
JB Weld.
Yes I'm taking photos of progress, will post asap.
Fun project! :-D

Look forward to upcoming progress reports

Thanks Frank! Yes this is fun, just have to get these cracks fixed and
reinforced which I'm doing tonight! Basically finishing the back by tomorrow
and I start the front tomorrow!

One question, are those speakers in the grill Thingy for the 3rd.speaker? :hmmm:

If I bath the front do those come out when I take the speakers out? :hmmm:
I still need a battery door but in a pinch I can use mine from my 9494's
or 9595.
There will be 2-4 photos within 2 days, crummy dial-up and It's at my
friends.

I'm going to take my time and go as far as I can and if the body and back
aren't good enough I may send it to Jimmy, just the shell?! :hmmm:
Mine is in somewhat rougher shape than I thought but I've restored 2
9994's so this is familiar stuff.
Have a good one! :-)

Hi Jeff,

I think we all got the GF9696 fever! The fever is spreading! :w00t:

Don't forget the tiny screw in the battery compartment when you remove the font cover. The center shiny tweeter cover can be taken off from the back by removing two screws to access the tweeters. Teh tweeter stays in a slot inside it. Then you need to disconnet the wires to remove the tweeter. Take pics to reconnect the + and - of the tweeters correctly. The other speakers will easily come off.

Mark and keep all screws of the speakers seperately. Center tweeters use different size screws, so also the APLD LED board. You have to disconnect the wire to remove the tweeters.
The head phone jack assembly comes out and it moves. This is something you need to watch for when you put the front cover back on. I use a small plastic to reposition and align it when I put the front cover back.

There are two small plastic clips holding the 3 LEDs for power on, and FM stereo and all. Unhook it when you remove the dial plate. It is very easy to break those two black clips. Careful not to lose the teflon washer behind the flywheel. :-D

Good Luck! I can't wait to see the pictures!

See the center part where the tweeter is held.

Hi Royce, already ahead of you,got all screws in order and many photos
of progress.
Yes figured out those tweeters, wires are color coded on those.
Keeping everything together as far as left and right side to.

Man these woofers have large spiders!! :-O Beefy magnets to!
Lots of travel when these get going !

I'll try to post some photos by Friday.
Sorry, don't really like the reviews or the privacy thing on that Photobucket. :hmmm:
I'm really particular as to what apps I have on my I-phone.
I only have like 5'apps.

Thanks for the kind advice Royce,I restored 2 9494's prior to this so
I have some experience and iI did a couple of others before this.
Will keep you guys updated. :-)

Front is all bathed and cleaned!!
Came out nice, took some extra to get all the rust stains out from a battery
that had leaked at one time but now-Clean!!! All gone!!
Yes!
Now I'm fixing a small crack up by the handle area and am reinforcing
the handle support area.
Then for some polishing once the crack is taken care of and reinforced.
Still have to bring up my studs slightly on my handle screw posts
before I can install handle.
This all should be done by Saturday then I can put speakers back in and
re-assemble!!! :surf: :-) Fun stuff huh kids???!
Sorry about no photos-working on this!!

Progress so far: I'm restoring the front case now, fixed and reinforced
the small crack, and have reinforced the handle support area.
Now I'm fixing a small hole that was on the very bottom,I'm actually
using the busted parts of a Sony egg that was busted up and in
the garbage at work!!!:-P
Yes even the bottom rail lines match up with the lines on the
bottom of my Sharp!! Love it
Just to do a small sliver to fill in completely and then to the handle stud
screw posts to be re-heightened and re-done and the front
case will be done!! :surf:
I can't wait. :-)
