Rebelting and sorting the gooey capstan on the 9090 is really easy....congrats on bagging one :)

Just make sure you tell the noob eBay seller to pack it well!!

Let us know what you think of it when you get it :)
The seller has owned it since it was supplied new to him in early 1980, which would make it one of the last ones sold and possibly a n/o/s bargain at the time. He knows what to do regarding the packing and has said that he's cared for the thing and loved it for 33 years so he's not about to risk hurting it by packing it cheaply.

The deck is just so easy to get at in these so I reckon maybe an hour and a half at most to fit fresh rubber throughout, clean off any old nylon grease, remove the tarry traces of the capstan sleeve and put it back together with a spot of the right stuff to lube the places where nylon gears are in contact. I may find the patience to refresh the capstan bushes as old Oillite is bound to be dry by now and may cause odd noises if I don't press them out and marinate them in 140 grade overnight. The slight touching up that the paintwork needs can wait.

This is why I love Sharp boxes, they're so easy to work on even for the relatively clueless like me...the last one I did was my 9494 and with no manual I had it dismantled and the deck completely out in under 10 minutes...none of my boxes from other makers have been even slightly close to these Sharps for ease to work on. Working on an Aiwa at the moment and I hate it!

Nice to get a one owner box so you know its history...just adds that little extra joy to owning it :-)

Well this has to be a record! I only bought this last night but today, just back from work, I find that APC have tried to deliver it. I've reorganised the delivery via their website for tomorrow. I'm not sure why the courier decided not to leave it with a neighbour, all of the others that deliver here know to try the next house first and then leave it at the post office if they're not in but this isn't a major problem, it's just my being impatient!

I've never heard of APC until now and I find that, had I not managed to decipher the driver's rubbish writing at the fourth attempt and so enter the correct consignment number and sort the date, I'd have had to make a 120 mile round trip to Chester Le Street - down South in County Durham - to pick the thing up. A pleasant enough day out but one I'm glad to have avoided as this way I'll still get some work done.

The fact that it would have been possible to have it within 12 hours of purchase is amazing. How do they do that? :hmmm:

:-D :-D :-D That is awesome man! Can't wait to see pictures! Kenpat rebelted the 909 I have so I'm good to go. I'm sure being a single deck, it won't be too bad.

I am loving those side crash bars  Interesting to see all the variations of the 9090 :hmmm: :-D
I added the roll bars myself.

Woooooooo-Hoo! She's arrived and she's a good one!
Last weekend's parcel was in fact a different item - a Mario Pony Chromebook - that I'd forgotten buying   , but the 9090 arrived this Morning in the careful hands of my friendly local Parcelforce man.
The box itself is as described and cosmetically needs no more than a good bath and some minor paintwork.

Packing was immense, with the outer box being about a quarter Inch thick, then some polystyrene corner brackets supported an inner box which contained a good half dozen layers of large scale bubble wrap, masses of airbags and my 9090, this inner box being insulated by yet more bubble wrap between it and that thick, outer box. It was in fact a great example of how to pack a delicate heavy thing perfectly and the seller, although he received his first ever feedback from me today (+ive of course), has in fact been an eBay member since 2006, obviously watching how other sellers do it before he took the plunge himself!

I'll start a resto thread about this one when I get around to it but it doesn't half thump and in fact - to my ears - matches the findings of the O/P of this thread in terms of its sound quality generally so thanks, Mr Lasonic TRC-920. Inspired purely by your favourable review, I'm now very glad I took the plunge and bought this one. I don't care that it's not rare or massively valuable, Sharp clearly put a lot of care into this bit of kit and I'm lovin' the thing.

Ah luv it, me! Tonight I couldn't help myself. The plan had just been to tighten one aerial pivot and straighten then lubricate both aerials so that I could maybe use it when I'm in the bath but then Donna Summer's "I feel love" came along on BBC Radio Borders and up went the bass, on went the loudness and out came the cleaning products. I didn't take a "before" picture and bear in mind that this isn't the restoration yet, but from a grubby old thing with ingrained dirt in every one of those little troughs around the sliders as well as in the on/off switch where the muck completely hid the fact that there was a red spot in there, I thought I'd give it a wee wipe down:

I must take photos during the actual resto job, but meanwhile, a period of familiarisation is in order, so I'll be using it as default bathroom radio. If there's no resto thread by, say, October, feel free to ask what the heck I'm playing at.

Oh, and please excuse my photos but the phone was handy and has a battery, two things my Fuji can't boast right now.
