OK, the front looks similar. Is that a line in on the front of the 9191?

Any chance of a few pictures of the top panel of the 9191?

It's a phono socket so I've got a phono attenuator and plug my iPhone in via that...put Spotify on and I'm happy :)

I'll take a pic or two once I've finished me brew

Here's the top panel :)
Thanks for the pic....OK...so, the 9191 has a mic into and mix knob and the 9090 has a switch that gives you meters / tuning / battery. Does the 9191 have a tuner light?

I also see that the did away with the "Balance" slider for 2 volume sliders.

Plus your phone in on the front.

So many Sharps...so little time! ;-) ;-) ;-)
I totally agree man....Sharp really represented back in the day!

Below are a few photos of my GF-9292 which has the same switch gear etc as the 9191:
The GF-9191 obviously has VU meters like your GF-9090 and has the same 2 dial lights as per your unit.

For interests sake, the GF-9292 has the left LED display doubling as a battery meter and the right LED display doubles as your tuner signal meter when you pull down on the spring loaded dial light switch:

There is only one tuner light bulb situated on the right. No light is obviously required on the left to back light the LED displays!

Thanks Jimmy, Really interesting to see the progression.

One thing that is very ergonomically correct on the 9090 is the switch for the Battery / Tuning Meter and the tuning knob are on the right side of the radio and the tuner illumination light is on the left. So you can hit the switch and tune with one hand and hit the light with the other hand....it's very easy and quick to dial in a station. It just makes sense and it works! I love all three of these 9090, 9191, 9292 :-D

Sharp built something for pretty much everyone back in the day. One thing I've been struggling to remember; what was the box that was around the same size - probably the same size exactly - as the 9191 and shared its front panel MM inputs, but came with Dolby B on the cassette deck? A friend of mine from uni days had one in his flat and even though I had my Technics back then, I always liked his Sharp but now of course I can't remember what model it was and at the time, much as I liked that Sharp, it was my Technics that everyone in the block wanted to invite to their parties. :-D

I always went along with it but could tell that it was the machine they really wanted there.

The sharp 9090 is the only sharp I would own again if I had to get one sharp radio. I had a 9292 and it was a huge disappointment. My Panasonic RX 5050 easily whipped it clarity, volume, stereo separation, and bass handling. I sold the 9292 right away, and kept the 9090 for some time, then sold that one. The 9090 has a nice solid build to it though.

Ok, so I said I'd try out my 9090 again as its been sitting on my shelf for a while as I'd been favouring bigger boxes. You're not wrong Chris, it's got a lot of kick for a small box...feel guilty for leaving it on the shelf now lol :) Forgotten what a good little box it is so I'll have to put it back in rotation with the others. Shame my euro one doesn't have a line in tho :(

You know....When Kenpat and I first spoke of this box he held it up and never hearing one before, I didn't know what to expect. It's strong....you can't let it's size fool you! It's like a Sunbeam Tiger....V8 in a tiny two seater!

Excuses for buying yet another box, number 571b:

In the interests of being able to offer an opinion about the 9090's sound quality based in the present and not on vague memories, I just snagged what appears to be a well loved and very clean if not quite perfect 9090 from eBay. The set has been with its original owner from new and has the usual gooey capstan sleeve trouble by the sound of things however, it's a tick on my boombox bucket list and I'm actually quite excited about this!

If I can do all of the rubbers in three GF-555s in succession and not have any excess parts left over when I'd done (all three including my own one "Big Pat" are working now), I can't see the single deck of the 9090 being too much of a challenge so the Hitachi 8080 moves back one more place down the line as the Sharp will be getting preferential treatment so that I can come back to this thread and tell everyone how it sounds to my ears.

Sharp, please don't let me down!

(On the subject of the small Rootesmobile with the large Ford V8; I once went to view a Tiger with a view to adding it to my car collection. Only it wasn't a Tiger. It was an Alpine GT (the one with the hardtop) with a DIY-fitted domestic (Rover P5B) V8 that had been dropped in there with no thought for ease of future maintenance (the ex-Buick Rover V8 is light but not small like a Mustang motor). I tried it out on the road but was concerned how much scuttle shake there was and, on getting down and looking underneath, it turned out that the car's cruciform box section chassis - essential to its integrity - was rotten and had been "repaired" with newspaper. I wouldn't mind but the bodger hadn't used a decent broadsheet, it was the Daily Mail that I dug out of the underside of that car with my hand. Some people....)

:-D :-D :-D That is awesome man! Can't wait to see pictures! Kenpat rebelted the 909 I have so I'm good to go. I'm sure being a single deck, it won't be too bad.

Rebelting and sorting the gooey capstan on the 9090 is really easy....congrats on bagging one :)

Just make sure you tell the noob eBay seller to pack it well!!

Let us know what you think of it when you get it :)
